i have a penny pinching aunt that lives just up the street from me. she has tons of money but she's just really stingy. she only shops at the 99 cent stores or dollar plus bargain stores. she doesnt go to expensive places (or decently priced places) her idea of eating out is mcdonals, jack in the box, burger king, and other such fast foods. she picks up every penny she sees because according to her "how can you make a dollar if not from pennies" her husband works for the navy and she's a dental assistant with another dental side job. when she goes to an all you can eat buffet she makes it a point to not eat anything the whole day and she goes at the end of their lunch hours so she pays cheap and then eats through the dinner menu.
she comments about how everyone else has more money than her, when really everyone just chooses to spend their money as opposed to putting it in the bank and storing it for someone else to make a profit of. she doesnt want to buy her dream car because its "a waste of money" and she doesnt want another house "she cant afford it"
truly puzzling... if you ask me you earn money to spend it, not to put all of it in some bank so that they can make a profit with lending your money to other ppls...
i dont wanna be related to her anymore
someone help...
Damn. To me, thats not a life. What is the point of saving, saving and saving. By the time you've saved enough for whatever, you're either too old to enjoy it fully or dead.

I whether lead a fulfilling life, having enjoyed my money and hard work and die with a few bucks in my bank account.

Read the book "The Millionaire Next Door". There are now over 1 million millionaires in the US (~1 out of 300 people). The vast majority of them are independent small business owners and penny pinchers.

Typically when you are young you want all of the spoils of life. At middle age you realize that you won't retire until you're 95 unless you make a serious effort to save some $$$ and start saving fast, and when you finally retire you realize that you should have saved more when you were in your 20's and 30's.

People spend hours clipping coupons or waiting 30mins in gas lines to save a few pennies never made sense to me. It's easier to spend that time being more productive and thinking how to make more money with investing etc.

"The Millionare Next Door" has been critisized for not making investing more important than saving. There are plenty of people who are millionares due to just buying a house or two, but very few of them know how to take the next step and use that equity to work for them.

How... I mean... why do you have an S2000 then?

I hope you're kidding...
i'm not kidding. i'm seriously a broke college student. my dad downed on the s2 and i've paid the past 2 months on with my savings. i'm expecting to get a job in the hospital as a phlebotomist (the ppl that draw blood) which is projected to pay hopefull 17 or 18 per hour. even just doing 20 hrs a week will get me through the car payments. thats how.
as to why. the s2000's been my dream car since i woke up to the world of cars. i knew i'd do anything to have one. one year i decided to save up hella but by the next year i used it up on tuition fees. if anyone's wondering i'm a second year nursing student at a private college. its 27 grand a year. go figure where all the money goes. to make the story short, my dad felt sorry for me and said in exchange for my miata he'll get me an S. then i said i'd just take over the payments when i'm capable.
i hope no one hates on me for this... lotta ppl think i'm a spoiled kid.

dear mav,
all i have to say to that is "we TRIED to tell her that"
she just won't listen.
i do agree with you tho, i'd rather lead a full life with a few bucks in my bank account than to have saved up my entire life and not have been able to enjoy it.
honestly, my future kids or whoever can earn their own money. money's value isn't truly appreciated unless you've earned it. they'll just go about spending the money carelessly if they get it too easily... "easy come easy go"

dont worry about being a spoiled kid, I think Im considered more spoiled. My parents paid my car off cash, but thats only because I make A's in school (getting into pharm school) But I work with a pharmacist who is a penny pincher to the max, she makes so much money but shes so tight with it. She'll go get like three boxes of strawberries and pick all the good ones and put them in one, I mean, good idea but who has time for that. Once she wanted to see how a nailpolish color looked on my nails, but she was hesitant for me to paint the rest of my nails since my nails are long... I got the hint so i didnt, but she STILL went off and got a new nailpolish since she used two coats on one nail, apparently that used a lot of nailpolish. Ive even been on dates with cheap ass guys that Ill split the tab and still have to pay the tip for the both of us. Im not looking for a sugar daddy, but seriously, if you can afford to take a girl out to x fancy restaraunt, Then DONT TAKE HER OUT, there are still parks and stuff that you can do. I dont have anything against penny pinchers, but I personally dont like hanging out with them and hearing them gripe about cents, I just feel like paying for them so they shut the f up.

I've heard of that book.

What is the point of having a million in the bank if you're not going to spend it before you get too old or die?

Better to be cheap and frugal than live above your means (see your other thread). I wish my relatives were penny pinchers.

I love when some gas station runs a $.75 per gallon special and they show the lines are 2 miles long..... save $2.00 per gallon x 8 gallons = $16.00 saved but a 2 hour wait and lots of gas used to inch forward every 5 minutes.

I have heard of that book too.... "the average millionaire drives a 3 year old american made sedan" or something goofy like that. blaaa

Live within your means, but certainly enjoy the $ you have. I figure if I save every dime I will get cancer the day I retire and die within a week.
