Default Cracked Windshield

OK, I was driving home from work yesterday and a rock came up and hit my windshield. All of the sudden the chip, cracked to about 4 inches. As I drove on a few minutes later, that 4 inches became 8 inches.

I got home and called my insurance company and confirmed what I already figured... The windshield would be less than my deductable.

So I figured I'd call around since they can fix that stuff while you're at work.

I woke up this morning and the crack is about 14 inches, assuming this is because the temps dropped overnight.

What is the hazard of leaving this crack? It's soley on the driver's side and the crack looks like it's taking a turn towards the side, and not towards the middle.

I figure this is the worst type.

dude, i'm no expert, but i wouldn't drive that thing. the fact that the crack is progressively getting longer and longer means your windshield will progressively getting weaker and weaker. the last thing you want is for the whole windshield to shatter while your driving on the freeway due to excessive wind force. if you plan on having it fixed sometime today then i'd take the chance and drive it, but i definitely would not drive it for days or weeks before replacing it.

Yea, that's what I was thinking about right after I posted it. If i wait longer, the crack could get worse and be a major hazard. Luckily, Window Dealers are cut throat so you can haggle with them.

They're coming out to my work to replace my windshield for a fraction of what I thought it would cost. Wooot.

Spend the extra $25 for full glass next time you renew your insurance. Honda glass is $500 and the knock off is about $300. I know I've had the glass replaced 4 times in 3 years!

Anything that big needs to be replaced asap. If nothing else, I would use superglue over the length of the crack before driving it again.

I drove around for two weeks before I had the glass replaced on my Acura Integra. There was an 12 inch crack on the drivers side, but I was too lazy to get it fixed right away. eventually it stopped. And there is no need to worry about the windshield cracking into a million pieces on the highway, there is a thin layer of glue in the middle of the glass to prevent that.

Were I you, I'd get it replaced ASAP! Why take the chance of a windshield shattering on you?
