Do you carry Pocket Knife with u?
I own a slew of knives, but the one that gets the most use every day is my Buck folding Alpha Hunter. I cut everything with it.. I don't really carry it around since I have a 9mm strapped to me for protection though.
I have carried a Buck 305 Lancer for the last 25 years. Convenient size and holds an edge.

I carry a Kershaw Leek.
Amazon: Leek
Best knife I've ever owned. It's spring assist and can be operated one handed for both open and close. The clip can be flipped so it comes out of your pocket ready to go. I sort of carry it for defense, but I mostly carry it because knives are just handy. I use it almost every day. It holds an edge great and is easy to sharpen due to the straight edge.

you never know when you'll need to cut something, i've even used mine as a screwdriver, even though the tip broke, hell it works better as a screwdriver now

I'd rather carry my knife because guns are too final.
Besides - knives are horrible self-defense tools. If you carry one for protection, start now with being able to respond when you're cut - and cut badly, because that's what happens in all knife fights. Everyone gets cut. How you deal with the physical impact (losing a lot of blood) as well as the psychological impact (OMG - look at ALL of this blood I'm losing!) and continuing the fight is key to whether you live...or die. Oh, and this is if you're trained.
If you're carrying a knife for protection and you don't know what you're doing, sooner or later this is going to get you in a jam that you're going to find yourself hard-pressed to get out of.
Anyway, BOT. The knife currently in my pocket is a Benchmade AFO automatic. Not the best, but it holds an edge pretty well, and since I can carry it legally, I figured why not?
Next knife purchase (whenever that is) - Strider SMF
I never leave the house without one, but then again, I'm usually never without a pistol either.
