I can probably argue until the cows come home, but to each his own, i'm not hear to change anyone's opinion, that's not my job, but I just urge people to not be so narrowminded when it comes to good Rap and Hip Hop, and also not put them in a specific caste system because there is a difference between good rap and bad rap, just as there is a difference between good classical music and bad classical music.. CCarnel, you want something with development, recurring themes, characters, almost as if it tells a story.. Listen to Slick Rick... I feel that NO other genre conveys raw feelings and emotions such as rap... And believe it or not, some rappers like/are influenced by classical music...
Here's a question. Those of who dislike Eminem and other pop artists, what other genres of music in the last 50 years or so would you consider good and talented? Since rap is out, rock would definitely be out as well...what does that leave? Would you say that all modern music is garbage relative to classical? Not flaming, just curious.
Also you asked why it matters how much skill or talent it takes to do something. I believe that part of the beauty of the music also lies in the skill involved in the mastery of that genre of music. I really identify with it because I grew up listening to and playing classical music (played piano since 5 violin and viola since 15). My parents were very strict and i was not allowed to listen to anything but classical music in the house until i was about 16.
Also you asked why living in a time of instant gratification is bad. As the wealth of our culture continues to progress I fear that we become more selfish and much less patient. We also loose the appreciation for what we do have and also loose the value of hard work, dedication, and perserverence. It just seems to make the quality of everything go down... food, music, play, vehicles (to all the 1/4 mile instant gratification junkies
), relationships. People just become less passionate in general because they don't have to work very hard (or as hard as before) to get what they want.Evo VII... I have some of slick rick's stuff downloaded but haven't gotten back to it in a long time. I'll have to check out more of his stuff.. Also the nice thing about classical music is that most of the surviving stuff has stood the test of time and a lot of the garbage (but definately not all) is gone
Eminem is very good at lyrics. He is smart about what he says on the mic and there are not too many people out there that can take him out. He did lose to Supernatural (which is one of the best freestyle MC's out there.) Eminem again is not the best but one of them. I know plenty of people who don't like him because of the crap he likes to stir up on his albums.. You can't tell me that he sucks and there are MANY people out there better than him because there isn't (lyrically.) Although, it is very unlikely that he will prove that like he did when he wasn't under Dr. Dre's wing. He doesn't need to now.
I wonder how many kids are writing down feelings, wishing to be able to hang a baby out the window? None.
I bet there are thousand upon thousands that are cutting words to deaf ears, never to be recognized for talent delivered in the cradle.
