May not have the "mental capacity"? Dude, he's alive isn't he? If he were a true friend he'd be feeling bad about it/thinking about it, and if he even has a pulse he'd have the mental capacity to come to the conclusion that it could have been a family members car that caused the damage.
You shouldn't have to ask, but since you are put in that position explain it to him as you have us, it's a dirty job but you MUST DO IT.

Have you given any thought to the posibility that it may have happened before you got to your friends and you hadn't noticed it? Could it have been there before?
I left my freshly restored 64 Corvette conv. at a friends for safety and his brother hit it 4 times in two days. His excuse was that his van had bumpers and "what good are they if you don't use them." I had to pay to have it repainted. Hope you have better luck.

dude, that totally and completely sucks.
ask to see the car. accidents happen, even among good friends. if they are truly friends, they will let you see the car and help make the situation good if it was their fault (even by accident). if not, it could put a permanent taint on your friendship b/c you'll always wonder, "did they?"

I drove straight to his house. This dent is big enough for me to have noticed it while washing.
We were thinking that maybe someone used his driveway to turn around and brushed up against my car. He lives off of a very busy street. I think this is unlikely because of the location of my car in the driveway.
PJK3,
You are right. I just have to explain my situation to him.
I'd hate to wonder about it my whole life.
Thanks guys.
I know it's funny, but you should try to see their family car without confronting your friend. If there are signs that they hit you then you know what to do. If not you spare the friendship. It's a hard decision, but that's what I'd do because if you take an accusatory stance toward his family (even though it's warranted) it's going to hurt your friendship either way, but at least if you can investigate you have a 50% chance of totally saving your friendship if there is no evidence that it was his family's fault.
just my $.02
just my $.02
if it was your friend's car that dented your car, wouldn't any paint chip from the other car be left on your car? Then you could do a colour match and see if it matches the colour of your friend's car... or something to that extent...
