IMHO, think of the manufacturer of the fakes....that is a stupid thing to overlook if you are going through the trouble of getting everything else right down to the T. From the crown on the glass, to the serial number, etc etc. Im going to see if I can get some early 1998-2005 catalogs, and see what I can come up with. Now imagine you were a jeweler. See how much time you need to take to deal with this crap?

You guys simply cannot use pictures online to have this argument. I've seen some of these fakes and by-my-word they are astounding. Seriously.

Not to mention that alot of the fakes use movement that is simliar if not identical to many of the entry level watches that people start their collections with. I'm a stickler for authenticity but some of these watches are extremely impressive.

I have a Daytona as well. I like the Daytona because IMHO, its not blingy at all. It is a very muted chronograph, and it is very simple. Unlike my Navitimer Heritage, which is EXTREMELY busy, a Daytona looks very nice with a nice suit at a dinner party. It's a watch has doesnt look out of place at a wedding, or as a softball game.
exactly why i have one.

and everytime you get it polished, it looks FANTASTIC!

for 2006, they now have a running "rolex" around the inside of the bezel....but i'm sure you knew this.

president isn't the greatest watch. if you don't wear it everyday or don't have the rotating watch box, it'll go dead and wont keep the time.

its just a status symbol. It's solid gold, the whole bracelet and the watch's frame itself.

for that much money, $2k, you could get a nice real Tag Heuer instead of getting something fake.

fake watches are just so superficial, worst than you actually having money to buy a $20,000 Rolex, imo.

but whatever floats your boat.

Perhaps, as long as your battery doesn't die. My Hamilton will never need a battery, and isn't off by more than a minute a month. Right now, it's about a minute and a half fast, and I last set it in February.
I'll probably never understand the "high-end" watch thing. I have a $37.00 Casio that I wear. Nice looking, and it's generally within 60 seconds of the actual time when I set it (every 6 months for DST). And for $37, I can afford to replace the batteries every 3-5 years for the rest of my life and still not come close to spending as much on it as many will spend just on the initial purchase price of a "high-end" watch. And if it gets lost or stolen, I'm only out 37 bucks.

So, what is it about these watches that motivates people to buy them? They don't have noticeably better timekeeping ability. Most of them don't look significantly better than a watch that can be had for a much cheaper price. Is it just the name? The ability to use it as a status symbol? Is it considered a "collectible", like stamps or coins? What's the draw?

to me, it's a highly desirable accessory. no different than an awesome tie.....or stylish shoes. people spend money on what they want to spend it on.

i'm glad i bought the daytona....i'm gonna give to our son when he graduates....consider it a family heirloom.

and my wife has a white gold date-just that she wants to give to our daughter when she graduates.

nice watches are no different than a woman's grandmother's wedding ring....

but i guess the main reason is that i don't want to wear a rubber strapped casio with my canali tux.

1. It's not a great watch because it'll go dead if you don't wear it? Dude, it's an automatic. All nice watches are either automatic or mechanical. So, you're either stuck wearing it or buying a winder to keep it running (auto) or you can have to wind it to keep it running, no regardless of wear (mechanical). By this logic, quartz are the only nice watches?

2. Fake watches are superficial, worst than having the money for a $20,000 Rolex? So... aside from not knowing the difference between worse/worst, this sentence makes having $20,000 seem like a negative.

I'm sorry, I'm picking on you... but every topic seems to have like three or four of these inane replies that make my head want to explode.

I have seen a lot of these fakes and I can attest to some great craftsmanship. I have a few friends that have real Rolexes but will still buy a fake or two to wear around.

I'm all for nice watches but could never wear something that is so ostentatious and recognizable like a Rolex, esp. gold or with diamonds. Fake or not. I know certain people go all in for that kind of stuff but thankfully none of my friends or loved ones do.

That being said, I did fork over $$$ for a nice watch but it's one that nobody recognizes. It'll make a fine hand-me-down some day.
