formal internet typing

The fact that you use "BTW", shows that you don't really have a problem with internet shorthand.
I'm comfortable with a certain level of informality in internet posting, just as I'm comfortable wearing casual clothes on a daily basis. OTOH, BTW, FTW, etc. etc. have been incorporated in my everyday internet lexicon. If someone chooses to make judgements of me on my use of them, so be it. I certainly don't use them on a resume.
Everyone's level of "acceptable" use of the English language is different, I suppose. I try not to make a habit of correcting people on the internet, as it's pompous of me to assume they want to be corrected, and we're talking about cars, not famous literature. However, I will decide whether or not a post is worth my time by looking at how it's been constructed regardless of content. And, I will state my opinion if someone starts a thread about it
.
i just have to type lolz0rz.
btw if u are truly sick with it, u really can just go to a interview in shorts and a tshirt. hell, half the programmers in my building workin in shorts, sandals, and tshirts!!! and they make more money than me (which sux because i have to dress up cuz i work in finance)!!!
if u want to judge someone by the way they type go ahead. if u want to ignore them please do, its ur loss. there is nothing wrong with shorthand and when posting on a forum, it should be perferctly acceptable.
i <3 typing 0 in playce of Os. its s0 fun. n00bz0rz

imo, anything "proper" or institutions that only allow "proper" are only doing so to discriminate between the well off and the less fortunate. manners, protocol, the "right" way of doing things is a luxury afforded by the rich.
yes, typing is not exactly realated. but the "proper" mentality is rooted in status oriented bs.

2. what the hell are you talkin' about? the way one types can also be looked at as a form of inflection. yo nigga = casual, laid back. hi dyhappy = formal, proper.
i've always taken "non-standard" internet speak as a form of conveying inflection.
when Magician types, it is always proper grammer, spelling, etc.
when Scot types, it's a hodge-podge of "hood-talk" and proper english.
i *feel* like i know how they would speak to me if i were sitting across the table from either of them....
i really enjoy how many disagree with me and call me nuts, but can't debunk the theory put forth. and for the last time, the status/language argument is not meant for the present where everyone can go to school for free.
i use the abbreviations, but sometimes it's like trying to have a debate with neanderthals.

PLYRS has a point FTMFW l337 Sp34k FTW my nigga!
Abbreviations such as BTW, IMHO, ETC, IIRC, PIITB are acceptable.
Any other type of leet internet speak garbage is just that.. Garbage. I agree with a previous poster in saying that when Im reading posts in leet speak I feel as if they are written in crayon.
First impressions are everything. Whether you like it or not, thats how society works. Its not just that way when talking to someone face to face. Its that way with emails, forums, chat.. Anything!
I also agree with PLYRS with the point of knowing how eachother would act if we were sitting across from eachother at the dinner table.
I think everybody here, including you dyhappy, should agree that posts "written in crayon" so to speak receive little to no respect from this site. Nor do they deserve it. Crayon posts show zero respect for other people.. Sheer laziness. Why should people have to decipher what the hell is trying to be said because you just want "to save some time". If your THAT pressed for time, you shouldnt be surfing "t3h interwebers"..
Ya feels meh nigga?

if someone from an ivy league school wants to act like a neanderthal, what can you do about it?
if someone from the hood wants to act proper, what can you do about it?
