It takes me no time at all to blast through a paragraph that someone has typed coherently; it will usually take twice as long for me to stumble through a paragraph of jumbled slang and acronyms. My theory is that if you read books for leisure or have an occupation where you are reading things that are typed properly all day long, you're much more likely to type like this.
i
the english language and it pisses me off when people ruin it!the only real difference between my "internet speak" and more formal stuff is that i don't bother to use capitals when i'm on the internet, which i don't think is detrimental to readability... the shift key is such a PITA.
when i first started working at a newspaper, i had the shit rookie job of having to take private party classified ads over the phone. (people selling their car, washer/dryer, couch, etc.) the cheap asses would always tell me to use all these obscure "abbreviations" they made up and then get pissed and want to talk to my manager when i wouldn't let them do it. we have a list of "standard abbreviations" that our publisher has approved, but we have a strict policy that we can't deviate from that list.
what would the newspaper turn into if we let everyone abbreviate anything & everything in the interest of saving money on their already heavily discounted "$3 for 3 lines for 3 days!" classified ad? it would turn into complete SHIT is what would happen. our paper would lose its credibility, nobody would be able to decipher WTF these people were selling, and it would defeat the whole purpose of advertising in the first place. but whatever, according to these people we're just being hardasses who are just trying to make an extra dime off of them...
i just want to tell them to eat a dick and shut up so i can talk to some real advertisers who are actually willing to spend money because they understand the value of effective advertising. but of course, your average joe blow (who is too dumb to figure out that he could just advertise this shit for FREE on craig's list) wouldn't understand that...
end rant. moral of the story... i don't care what medium you're using, don't rape the english language in the interest of time or money, it's not worth it.
