I love this thread. It's very entertaining.I dont use shorthand when typing on the web personally because; well im just not lazy and im apparently not hip to the whole internet lingo thing.I also just dont want to be perceived as an idiot and believe that spelling everything out gets your point across alot better.I personally dont waste my time on posts that are all abbreviated and typed in slang..it confuses me and i dont have time to try and figure out what it is your attempting to say.I can try to understand both points of view on this topic.Example: At work we are "encouraged" to use abbreviations because "corporate" believes it may be more proficient. There is even a list of words with the approved abbreviations that are to be used.HOWEVER..people still get lazy and make up thier own abbreviations/shorthand for certain words and it has made things more difficult and takes longer to figure out what someone is trying to say.If they had just spelled it out instead of trying to cut corners....we would actually be more proficient than we are now.Words like FTW,FTL are in my opinion acceptable but only because they have been used so much that everyone knows what that means. But to type everything in shorthand....well like said above, you will be perceived as lazy and uneducated. To be technically correct though.....Only about 10% of this entire country(thats a gestimate of course)uses "grammatically correct"english anyway.I'll end here before i touch on the whole english with race/cultural thing. That I could talk for days about.Again this is all IMO!
I applaud your efforts and your thought process. Now just learn to hit the return bar occassionally to make multiple paragraphs. It would make your post much easier to read.

Capital letters, while important, aren't as necessary to understanding as is correct spelling.

Your post was a quickie way to type and has some shortcuts, BUT it was much easier to read than his and consequently you appeared more intelligent than him. It just goes to show you that you don't have to use fake language &/or weird spelling to do it quickly.

adding a space or two after a period does wonders for readability.

This thread is ridiculous. The appearance of your thoughts put to type on a screen is a reflection of your thought process. To me, typing with correct punctuation, capitalization, and spelling is like brushing your teeth every day or shaving; it's a form of projecting an image.

It takes me no time at all to blast through a paragraph that someone has typed coherently; it will usually take twice as long for me to stumble through a paragraph of jumbled slang and acronyms. My theory is that if you read books for leisure or have an occupation where you are reading things that are typed properly all day long, you're much more likely to type like this.

If we're talking about efficiency, how is it more efficient to learn two completely different ways of typing instead of just one? I'll bet you anything that the only reason most people on the other side of this argument don't type things out completely is that they never learned to type by touch using the qwerty method, and try to justify their "efficient" way of typing as being easier to read (when in fact it is not). Well, it wouldn't exist in the first place if they could type.

By the way, that quote from George Orwell that is used to justify trainwreck's argument is typed with 100% correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. How does that jive with dyhppy's original theory that it's not "rude and disrespectful to save some keystrokes"?

wish there was a smilie for walking home with my bat

can't debate with nimrods. if u were intelligent, u couldn't either. i mean that in the nicest way possible.

another thing i now realize is that many of u may be referring to internet speak that i dont even use. using 3 as "e" for example is kinda tough, plus it doesn't save a key stroke.

Actually one space is the "correct" way since the advent of the computer and proportional spaced typefaces.

The older 2 space rule was due to the inability of a typewriter to change spacing and it was needed for clarity's sake. Otherwise it was hard to tell when one sentence ended and another began.

I still find it hard to do one space as that is the way I learned.

Hmmmmmm, I said clarity's sake? That just about sums up why you don't type the way dyhappy does.

On a message board, what you say and HOW you say it is sometimes all anyone sees of you. Assuming people won't judge you on your grammar/spelling/and use of 1337 speak and abbreviation is as assinine as assuming you're not judged by your wardrobe when meeting someone in person.

If you want people to treat you like an adult, type like one.

If you want people to treat you like a child, tYp3 liKe dis y0.
