Gay is the new black

personally since marriage is apparently such a polarizing issue among people of religious backgrounds, i'd rather the gov. stepped out of it entirely and made civil unions the definition for all marriages . . . .
Either
"Marriage" is not religious, and therefore should not be inaccessable to gay couples;
OR
"Marriage" is religious, and should not be regulated by the state.
In the latter case, the state would merely give out Civil Unions, and "getting married" would be a product of your religious group affiliation.
That would be making it fair on behalf of the government. Separate but equal should not be a basis in our system.

That's possibly the best idea yet on this thread.

You wanna defend marriage? Stop getting divorced.
The civil union for all would fulfill most, if not all of the issues:
1. It would no longer be an argument for "separate but equal"
2. It would thusly, provide for equal protection under the law.
3. Maintain, if not set further explicit precedent, of separation of church and state.
For those of you voicing against opposition to Prop. 8; move away from religious or racial bickering. Focus on the more dangerous issue: trumping the 14th Amendment. I personally find it wrong that that many Americans are supporting creating more situations that are "separate but equal" within the state's charter document.

If anyone else can argue that the italicized/bold text above is irrelevant here, I'd love to hear it.
But I would like to say it is not saying don't judge. It is saying judge in the same way you want others to judge you.

I'm am not saying I agree with it or against it but this is a pretty difficult statement to read two ways.

Once again, you ought not to judge the merits of a principle based on manner in which ill-equipped people implement it.

ok, here's the thing that blows my mind.
I'm in no way condoning the past, but if you look at a timeline of the last 25 years, or the last 50 years, or the last 100 years, or the last 500 years, or the last 2000 years, you'll see the large steps we've taken in the past 4 decades towards equal rights, regardless of sex, religious belief, race, or sexual orientation.
are we perfect yet? no, of course not.
do we still have a ways to go? of course we do.
but we are making our way. prop 8 was shot down by a narrow margin, but we should be so lucky to have that even introduced as a bill. it wasn't very long ago that sodomy was an illegal act, regardless of consent.
I think we've come a long way in the rights for minorites, women, and homosexuals, moreso than any other civiliazation we know of.
so what if it takes 10 more years? 10 years is but a drop in the bucket of time.
but if you think that radical change will just jump up and all the sudden centuries-long traditions/morals/etc will just reverse course, you live in a fantasy world.
