Good story. Whenever I hear people who want to get a pet and try to chose between a dog and a cat, I don't understand how some people choose "cat".

You get into any kind of danger and the cat ignores you and licks its butt.

If you're actually buying a pet as a safety device, you might want to rethink things.

I don't live near water and wear a life jacket in situations where drowning is a concern. I also live in a condo and therefore don't have a yard. Still can't imagine which pet would be more appropriate?

Hero cat saved my job by waking me up because my clock radio had been blaring for 45 minutes, the wife was out of town and the cat couldn't tolerate the noise any longer.
