i disagree. family is NOT overrated. it is even underrated. like it or not, having a messed up family seriously screws with the rest of your life it ploops a huge workload in your lap that most people never even begin to work through. if your family is functional and supportive, it's more valuable than millions of bucks. his life will never be as great, imo. he may achieve personal, financial success, but there will always be a part of his foundation that will feel unfullfilled, nudging him towards addictive behaviors like smoking, drinking, shopping, etc.
this isn't a doomsday prophecy. im simply saying that a good family is VERY important and it also isn't in your control when you're the kid. you can live a great life, but it's so much harder with this burden.

The main thing you should do is make sure you look after yourself so you can leave that craphole behind and start your own someday.
