yeah,, i won't buy any watches that are 500 over from the net.. i go to the dealers and check them out b4 i buy them.. You can usually make them drop like 100-150 down from the price they want anyways,, you can't inspect the watch that you buy from the net.. They make some pretty nice FAKE watches now days,, They look exactly like the real ones and they're not cheap either.. so watchout....
The watch is EcoDrive. Meaning that it never needs a batterie, basically it's solar powered. Any light keeps it going. The watch band is titanium. The color scheme kicks major ass. And it's nice and simple.
I am in the jewelry business. I agree with the TAG and Omega suggestions. For around $1500, they are the best watches you will find. Another great watch in that price range is Baume & Mercier. Very high quality, and a little less common than some of the other brands. A true sleeper...and a great way to be different.
Having handled many, many Movados, I am not impressed with them...no offense to anyone who has them. I just feel that a watch should actually be made in Switzerland if it says "Swiss Made" on the dial. Most Movados have Swiss-made movements, but the rest of the watch is assembled somewhere else. Also, for that price, a watch should be made of surgical-quality stainless steel...not base metal.
Baume and Mercier, someone at a local shop suggested something from that brand.
But I did stumble into something, I found a local shop that restores and re-sells classic and high end watches. Everything that comes is verified for correctness cleaned and has its appropriate tune-up they have all sorts of cool little off the beaten path brands. I told then I would stop by tommorow on my lunch break. Keep the suggestions coming though I still have found a cool skeleton yet.
i did borrow a watch magazine from a buddy of mine as well and man there are some really expensive watches out there. Of course the first one I picked out was like some ungodly amount of money.
This seems to be a rather hot topic so post what you wear if you could maybe might get some more cool ideads from you guys.
I'm an Ebel guy myself. 2 mid-sized 1911's. One with the metal deployant buckle bracelet and one sharkskin deployant strap. The bracelet watch is what I wear 90+ percet of the time. Sporty but dressy enough. Used, they fall into your price range (for the 18kt/stainless models) I believe the all stainless models are priced pretty well also. You have your choice of automatic or quartz movements (pretty hefty premium for the auto though)
Unabagler - you're in good company. I read an interview once that featured the president of Sony - Akio Morita. The interviewer commented on the fact that he wasn't wearing a watch. He said something to the effect that he didn't need to - not having to give in to the demands of time was kind of the ultimate "power statement"
I don't have that kind of juice, so I need lots of watches. I love my Breitling as well. Hell... I love almost ALL of my watches - don't get me started...
I love watches too. Here's one that I had recently purchased:
Omega Speedmaster Date. I love this watch and it only costed me a little over $1500.
Here's my other watches:
From left to right: (Back row)- Gucci Stainless, Omega Speedmaster Date, Rolex Date (w/smooth bezel and Oyster band), Rolex DateJust (Fluted bezel and Jubilee band), BVLGARI Aluminum, (Front row)- Tag Heuer Formula1 Chrono, Cartier Santos Ronde.
For the price range of $1000-$2000, I would recommend an Omega. It offers great lines of watches to suit your needs. It has classic designs, and reputable name. (Sports-Speedmaster or Seamaster. Dress- Deville, although a little more $$) Tag Heuer are good watches that are durable, functional, and quality. (Sports- Kirium or Monza. Dress- Targa Floria or Carrera) or maybe you'd prefer a Longines or Ebel. It really comes down to personal preferences. There's lot's of good watches out there. My advice is to try on the ones that appeals to you and go from there. Let us know what you choose or have considered.
