Its sad that this happens, scary that its becoming more and more common. When you have 300 million people, going to have the crazies.
the best thing is to avoid putting yourself into those situation. Dark isolated area at 2am/3am. As sick as it sounds, I laughed to myself, "godly young people" (minister) one member of campus crusade for christ were all alone in a dark empty park parking lot, miles away from anybody else. I bet that was a very intense, hot and heavy bible study session...
oh and OP congrats on the RN. welcome to the shit show. Just remember when you get to orientation and you start working, its hell at first, especially if you're at a big hospital. I made it, so did most of my friends so you'll get by.

I know the average American wants to be John Wayne and own a bunch of assault rifles and whatever. But I would support compulsory psychological testing for gun owners, required every 5 years or so. As it stands, whackjobs can get guns pretty easily.

thats a good set up. Had a friend in nursing school (we graduated may '08) who was already in the navy but they were paying him active duty pay AND paying for his school. Such a sick set up. Im sure you can get student loans if any taken care of by them. I heard airforce was best branch to do medical stuff for though. Was considering something like that until family got wind of it. Having family already having served in Iraq had them less than pleased with that idea.
I could be wrong but I've heard its a lot different in the service as far as staff/MD relations. Much of it better. You are a commisioned officer so they can't treat you like trash.
Recent sign the world is coming to end, friend of mine got floated to open heart/CTICU step down. Somebody was having real bad break through pain and night/covering MD's have room on side of the unit where they chart. He goes in and asks for a one time order of IV morphine or something. MD says no. He questions why he can't have it, MD gives some BS reason and he calls him out on it. MD goes crazy and yells at him "who do you think you are?!" loud enough that staff at the nurses station heard the commotion. Then my friend opens up the door to let the doctor hear the yelling/screaming pt. down the hall. Then he got his order.
This work is hard enough as it is. Last thing anybody wants is hassling and to have to really work to get something a patient truly needs and deserves. 95% of the time this is what happens. "So and so is having break through pain of 8/10 (blah blah give your assessment, can we give him something additional? like ____ (insert what you think may work or what the unit norm/protocol is)" MD: "yeah sure
" and you have what you want.

I'll preface this by saying what happened is awful, but I have two problems with this story...One is the description of the victims as 'godly young people, the cream of the crop' - insinuating that because they are good Christians, their lives are worth more than anyone else's. (Like others, I don't believe the two were just 'enjoying the night, the friendship.' If they were gettin, it on, all the power to them, but let's be realistic people...)
My other issue is that heavy coverage of articles like this tend to unnecessarily instill fear in people. I'm not saying this story shouldn't have been reported, but the truth is, the vast majority of violence, fatal and otherwise, is committed by people who are known to the victim. Even with 'random' violence, there are warning signs. Unfortunately, people don't recognize them, or there aren't enough services and supports to prevent the violence.
