Default International Text Messaging

Got a quick question.. hopefully someone can help..

Send/receiving text messaging overseas... I know that if you use a US carrier, there are international rates that apply..

What about Canada?

I am pretty sure that with Verizon, you can send/receive text messages and not have to pay an "international" surcharge....

but..what about other carriers? I was looking at possibly switching to ATT and was wondering whether or not they charge extra to send/receive text messages in Canada (or just the normal usage rates).

Thanks in advance

Actually you'd be surprised. I was in Italy and text messaged my sister back in the states it only cost me $.50 not bad AT ALL considering calling costs a lot more. BTW I have ATT/Cingular.

If you have a data plan you can use Gizmo to send sms text messages without getting hit by text message fees - there's a phone and a web app to do it. Of course, you need an international data plan since its going over the Internet, so it may notbe any less $.

If you have a GSM phone, email or call your provider and tell them you're going abroad and need to unlock your phone. With an unlocked phone you can just buy a simcard from a provider in whatever country you're in and put that in your phone. I did the cingular international thing a few years ago and my bill for that month was insane....Maybe it has changed since then, but I haven't bothered with taking my phone back to Europe since then.

EDIT: I just realized I didn't even answer your texting question, but with the international plan they definitely charged me more than 25c a text. I do recall it being cheaper to receive a text than send one though.

In Canada? no it doesn't....

I am with Verizon right now and I haven't had to pay anything extra (I'm on the unlimited texting plan).

I'm concerned that if/when I switch to an iphone, I'll be using the ATT network... which I'm not sure charges for texting while I'm in Canada. (even if I have an unlimited texting program).

I am drawn towards going back to ATT or TMobile because of the SIM card option (which will work well when I travel to Europe)
