I have a really hard time seeing how $240/yr for tethering is in any way sensible.

It's not. Should be 100% free with the LIMITED data plans they're offering now. Paying for tethering only makes sense to me for unlimited plans.. thankfully I have unlimited.. for free. Go VZW and rooted Droid.
