Default Job situation

early last year i decided i needed a "real" part time job for the school year. a freind of the family runs an insurance business and needed someone to help out with their marketing efforts. i got hired. they have been extremely good to me. they let me take off 6 weeks to study in germany, take me out on occasion, and even put me up in nice, france for a few nights while i was in europe. while this was happening, i also knew what was happening...it was becoming harder and harder for me to leave. the job is good, pay is alright for part time and i have lots of leeway to make my own decisions...unfortunatley, i am bored as hell...my time at the office feels like office space...

i had an interview today with a webstie design/web applpications compnay...very youth oriented..office had a nice feel..founders graduated from my school. they will match my pay plus bonuses...of course i havent been offered the job yet but i dont plan on staying at the insurance place past next spring. i find myself in an increasingly awkward situation where quitting will be quite a task. my boss is a great business woman so on 1 hand i know that she knows providing perks will makeit harder for me to leave but on the other hand she is a friend of the family. crickey.. anybody have situations similar. advice welcome

That's why they say not to mix business with family... but anyways, I'm sure if you explain the situation to her she will understand... it's nothing personal, after all. I think it would be foolish of you to stay at a job you don't like just because your boss is a family friend...

Business is business, and fundamentally, you're in business for yourself, your ideas, and your philosophy. There is no greater advocate for you than you.

I'd be damn sure that the new place paid you far more than this one before even thinking of moving on.

I agree. IMHO, you NEVER switch jobs that offer equal pay, unless the one you are at treats you like dirt. From your description, I wouldnt leave for anything less than a 15% increase in salary.
