Kid suspended 10 days
It get's better.. not only was he talking to his mom on the cell during school, but his mom's serving in IRAQ! I can't beleive these stupid people. How can they suspend a guy who wont / will not see his mom for more than a year. In-freaking-credible.

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A high school student was suspended for 10 days for refusing to end a mobile phone call with his mother, a soldier serving in Iraq, school officials said.
The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was "defiant and disorderly" and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.
The confrontation Wednesday began after the 17-year-old junior got a call at lunchtime from his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, who left in January for a one-year tour with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion.
Mobile phones are allowed on campus but may not be used during school hours. When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."
Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.
"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

Sorry, but I have to side with the school on this one. There is a respectful way to say no and using profanity is NOT one of them! He was suspended not for phone usage but for his profanity and his actions when asked to hang up the phone.
I say keep up the good work <insert school name here>, kids get WAY too many rights and cussing at teachers should not be one of them.

i'd tell him to call her after school......i would've suspended him for the year.....they shouldn't even let kids have cell phones on school grounds....what do they need that for....they are there to learn....
i don't give a rats a$$ if his mom's in iraq.......what so all of a sudden u.s. soldiers gets special treatment....
no one forced his mom to join the military and be away from her son for a year....
have a nice day

you guys are being way to harsh on the kid..
have some humanity ...
and technology has change...
no longers the days of cell phones are bad for communicating with dangerous people..
cell phone is a form of communication..
if you're afraid of advancements and technological innovations. move to cuba or some facist/dictator state
yes the kid is rude for using profanity against his teacher. but do u realize what it means to have a love one (especially that is direct blood to you)... in a hostile area like iraq...
that conversation could be the kid's last with his mother. have some sympathy..
and high school rules and regulations need to change... some of them are way outdated for today's current society..

Looks like he got suspended due to the profanity and the manner he reacted to the teacher telling him to get off the phone, NOT for the sole reason that he was on the phone.
They were right to suspend him based on the facts. It's fair to everyone else.
Say for example he was talking on the phone with his mom to ask what time she's picking him up after school. If he reacted in the same manner he would still get the suspension. So it was his acting/reacting, not the fact he was on the phone.

You don't exactly get to talk to someone in Iraq whenever you want.
They run on completely opposite timezones also.
Kind of sad that someone who is keeping America's freedoms can't talk to her son much. That's probably one of the only times she is available to call as her son is probably asleep for school the next day when she is wide awake serving in Iraq.
There are better ways the guy could of handled it, but I would of been pretty ticked off if the school staff could not understand the situation.
