When I first heard this story on the radio yesterday it was stated that not only was the kid at lunch he told the teacher, "No, I'm not hanging up. This is a call from my Mom in Iraq." The teacher then grabbed for the phone causing it to hang up and drop the call. The kid didn't get mad and cuss until after this happened.

Now, the kid shouldn't have been on the phone if the rules say NO PHONES. Still, if this was the only time my Mom could have called me from a war zone I sure as hell would have had my phone on and I would have talked to her.

I understand zero tolerance and the kid should be in some trouble for losing his cool bit if the teacher had shown just a little humanity none of this would even be an issue.

I think some of you forgot what how alot of teachers treat high school students. I'm 10 years out of high school now and maybe I still have some growing up to do and possibly the teachers in my lil suburban part of Ohio carry a larger chip on their shoulder then most. However........

He very well could have said "no I'm not hanging up, it is my mother in iraq" then the teacher pulls him down the office, where he gets badgered for telling the teacher "no". Well ya know what? If my mother was over seas fighting for the rights that alot of americans take for granted and I was told to hang up. I said no. Then if I got yelled at for it, or heaven for bid they threaten me, I would blow up. I hope he swore at the principle in such a vulgar manar that he looses sleep over it. His freaking mother is in a WAR.

I'm backing the kid on this. The school needs to get of their damn soap box and start dealing with reality like the rest of us. Oh btw, what is the point of allowing phones to be on a person in school, but not use them under any circumstances? This should have been the exeption, big deal the kid swore at the principle.....How much you wanna bet the principle was rude to him?

School policy is for cell phones to be turned off. It is not the school offical's fault .. he was enforcing the policy.....it is his job. Hard to believe that there are those who would defend the use of vulgar lanuguage, by a minor, to an adult (the reason, he was suspended). It shows the moral decline of our nation. No respect for authority. I went to school for twenty years straight. I have seen it all. Bad teachers. Bad students. I know the kid is upset....but you still can't curse at a teacher without repercussion. I feel sorry for the kid, but the cell phone should not have been on to begin with. I guess many of you would feel we need to provide all the kids, who have a parent at war, with a cell phone if they cannot afford one. I mean... it is not right that this kid get to talk to his mom when many others can't................. His "Freaking" Mama joined the army...armies go to WAR. She knew this when she joined. Call the kid when he is not in school, Baghdad is 7 hours ahead of Colombus, Ga. Do the math. I know , I know, Mom may not be able to pick when she can call...okay then inform the principle, change the policy, whatever. But don't cuss the teacher are you will be sent home.

So if the policy is to jump off a 90 story building will you?

And you can't say that is totally different because kids are forced to go to schools and forced to obtain to their policies so again--

if you were forced into an area where the policy is to jump off a building will you?

---There are exceptions to EVERYTHING and this kid definatly had an exception

Actually they are different. Jumping off a building would cause bodily harm. You can't have rules that endanger people. I thought this would be obvious, but apparently not.

No, kids are not forced to go to school. Where are you getting all this crap from? When you have kids, pull them out from school and see if you get arrested or have to pay any sort of penalty. No one forces kids to go to school.

However, I do believe this whole deal has blown way out of proportion. Although I agree the kid deserves a penalty for his conduct to the teacher, a 10 day suspension is not warranted.

Where are you from? It is illegal to not go to school until you are 16 I believe atleast in NJ it is.

I may have given a little out of porportion example but the bodily harm in the case of the kid is the Mom could die any day and he deserves a couple of minutes to talk to her. If the teacher took the phone away from me and hung up I would have raised hell.

And yes school rules have gotton way out of porportion. My High School tried to suspend me once becuase I didn't feel to well and had to use the bathroom. Needless to say they told me no and I went anyway. That was interesting when I called my parents up and told them I was sitting in the main office because I had to take a shit. Those were the fun days

People on an authority trip rule. Don't argue with them. They are always right because the institution says so.

thes2kway - Nah I know where you're coming from and honestly you are right.

The problem I have with 'authority' figures - IMO - ALOT of them expect the respect and don't give it back. The way most my teachers abused their power was sickening. One of the better ones was always handing back test scores back to people from highest to lowest - and announcing everyones grade out loud as she passed them back. Someone asked to go to bathroom because he thought he was gonna hurl. Teacher said no. He went back to his seat, and proceeded to puke all over the computer. LOL He got in trouble, but as far as I'm concerned the school got what they asked for. Everything changed in college because teachers actually treated me like a person and gave respect, not a one expected it untill they gave it first.

Words are words, must be decensitized to it. /cough degrade of our society, won't argue that either I guess. Really though, they only carry as much meaning as you let them, maybe having a teach hang up on you're mom while fighting a war got him a little emotional. Who knows what she just said or was about to say to him. I can't imagine dealing with that emotionally at 17, especially if this is a single parent home?

The entire kid swearing to an adult thing - I can't tell you how many times I ended up swearing in the principles office and/or at a teacher. As young as 2nd grade. Mostly because (as far as I could tell) they where not dealing with reason. Out of frustration I ended up using vulgar words to release. Wrong? Yes. Did a 10 day suspension (or any in this case) fit the crime? No. Also, I obviously have had a bad taste left in my mouth from the public school system.

I could ramble forever....and in the process make myself look dumber then I am (if I already have not done so) so I'm stoping now. I still 100% back the kid.
