completely agree, their deal on the 42" is insane ($1025 w/ a 5yr warranty rebate).....bottom line though is if someone is going to cheap out on the TV, you know they will cheap out on the cables so their picture will never look that great anyway.

Incubus you are thinking a 42" DLP set is going to be just as good as a 42" plasma for less money and that's just not the case. Buy the 42" Panasonic panel, speakers, wall mount or stand, HDMI module, pay for HDTV and you will be blown out of your seat. Buy the DLP TV, pay for HDTV, invest in some good drapes and sit directly in front of it and you'll get a bigger picture which isn't great but better than your 32" trinitron.

Everyone is giving you the same advice (more or less). If you get the plasma you will love it for years. Get the DLP and you'll love it for months.

Don't forget if you buy the 42" plasma posted you aren't paying sales tax so that offsets the shipping cost.

This is so funny.

Plasma sucks, LCD sucks, DLP sucks. I am the only expert. I know what is best, you are wrong.

avsforum is the place to ask about this, not here.

Are you serious? You couldn't be more wrong. Go look at the two side by side at Best Buy or Circuit City. The only thing going for CRT is it can cut out all the light (IE true black levels.) The sharpness on a CRT TV, even mitsubishi's Diamond series, cannot touch the picture quality of a newer DLP, LCD, or Plasma. Not to mention, CRT TV's require QUITE a bit of maintenance to keep running correctly. I know that people have stories of them lasting 15 years without touching them, and still saying they look great, but the truth is, those people really have no idea what does and does not look good. CRT's need professional convergence adjustments every 2-4 years, and if your light guns go out, have fun paying $750 for some new ones

The truth is, plasma has the best picture out there. If you get a newer generation, decent name brand plasma, whether it is Fujitsu or Pioneer (the best), or even samsung or pioneer, they all have built in technology called pixel orbit (pixel shift) which pretty much eliminates risk of burn in. BURN IN is not to be confused with retention, which can happen with any plasma when watching a still image, but will go away within moments. Conversely, if you get burn in on a CRT, you are sometimes stuck with it

Resolution? That is a tough call. Right now, you can find many LCD's under $5,000 that have a 1080p, or 1920X1080 resolution. This is important, because it is 2 million pixels, double that of a conventional 1280X720p TV. Right now, the only two technologies that output 1080p are blu-ray and HD-DVD. There are only a few plasmas that have a native resolution of 1080p. The Two most popular of which would be the Pioneer PROFHD1, and the Panasonic 65PX600U.

In the end, get what looks best to you. Keep in mind, Plasma is the superior technology. It is MUCH faster than LCD (almost 8 times), and both are rated to last 60,000 hours. I play video games ALL THE TIME on my Samsung Plasma with no ill effects, a la pixel orbit.

That being said, my next TV will be a DLP. Yes, Plasma's are typically far superior to DLP, but Samsung just threw a wrench in called LED DLP. Their newest release, the HLS5679, uses 18 LED diodes to project on to the screen. This means no bulb replacement (industry standard is 60,000 hours, although samsung only underrates the diodes at 20,000 hours). It is also 1080p, and has no color wheel, like a conventional DLP, so it is much faster. Colors are also extremely accurate. The only downside is the up and down viewing angle.

Also, please be aware that if you buy a TV at some crazy online site, in most cases, you will not have a manufacturer warranty. There is a reason why TV's are more expensive at major retailers. Any authorized reseller will give you a manufacturer warranty. Go into your local best buy or circuit city and ask them about what they price match. You may be able to get a pretty decent deal and actually have some peace of mind.

Good luck in your search!
I am serious. It is an accepted FACT that CRT offers the BEST resolution available with the best color representation.

A Sony XBR 32" CRT will OWN any of the tech you've listed.

The ONLY new tech (that's not even out yet) that has been touted as the first to topple CRT is SED.

Me thinks your eyes are fooling you in your side by side test since you want to believe the newer tech is better with PQ. ITS NOT.

He's not talking about rear projection CRTs.

S5087W is actually closer to $1400, plus shipping puts you around $1500.

... you know they will cheap out on the cables so their picture will never look that great anyway.
EDIT: This is written assuming the owner will AT LEAST buy some sort of digital cables and not try to use analog.

Cables: Digital video signals either make it from the tuner to the TV or they don't. The quality of the cable is not really as big a concern with digital signals as it is with analog.

Digital signals aren't prone to static, interference or ghost images like analog signals are. They do a better job of carrying the information that makes up the picture.

Wrong again. Sorry.

First of all, Sony doesn't even make a 32" XBR CRT. It is a 34". Second of all, Sony doesn't even say that this TV has the highest resolution, stating a maximum resolution of 1080i, HALF the resolution of a 40XBR2 at 1 million pixels (1080i) vs 2 million (1080p) on the XBR2. I'll admit the 34XBR970 has a great picture, but once you get into projection, sorry, the technology is old and dying.

Me thinks that you should become educated before you keep spreading misinformation to members on this forum
