Most of the people who have a DUI on their record only ever have the one. It's those few who have more than one that are the real scourge.

On the other hand, people who have never even had a single DUI may still make a mistake and go driving when they shouldn't.
Just because someone only has ONE DUI on record doesn't mean that it was the ONLY time they did it. They have BEEN doing it and finally got caught.

Majority of people that drink and drive have a drinking problem.... period.

I'll say it again... in the Military, it's taught over and over and OVER again. To receive the training and then to do it anyways shows a lack of judgement, cavalier attitude and usually a problem with alcohol.

Civilians can sometimes get away with minimal scathing... but In the Military he is held to a higher standard. His actions not only effect himself but now his entire Chain of Command and the inconvenience he has caused his division and his shipmates.

DUI is a purely selfish act.... no one can justify having to do it.

Unless things have changed, you can overcome this if your enlisted. If your an officer, it may become difficult or impossible to advance in rank.
A first/second Luetenant that stays in might find it impossible to advance beyond Major.
Since the civilian side punished him, there's only so much the military can do now. At least it's like that in the Chair Force. (Can't be punished twice for the same crime) Enlisted - depending on punishment from military, his career isn't finished but certain "doors" are now closed depending on if he has to attend the Substance/Abuse class. That permanently goes into your Medical File/PIF. The officer side is a completely different animal altogether and is dependent on your CO and the "publicity" of the incident. IF it can be swept away, it will be swept. No harm, no foul.

But in all fairness to the OP, he is probably young and doesn't see the big picture on some things. I'm sure when you were between the ages of 13-24, you had your fair share of things that you wouldn't even consider doing now that you see the big picture and measure the consequences of your actions.
The OP is 26 years old...so unless he just joined the Military, he has been in long enough to know and is probably been responsible at one point or another to give the lecture HIMSELF to younger sailors.

Your grasp of the Military and the UCMJ is way off. Your interpretation of the differences between Enlisted and Officer is even more off... I know because I've been both.

I can't argue that point. I was just assuming the OP was young.

Not trying to be mean, but you already got your break you didn't kill yourself or anyone else. I hope you use this as a learning lesson and as far as your car I would go FI. Too everyone else I've had two family members and and a few friends killed by drunk drivers, the op ****ed up royally and he knows it and I don't think he's trying to down play it, so don't judge him too harshly since we've all made mistakes.

"ban alcohol and legalize marijuana"

I 2nd the above!

I would much rather pull out at 2AM in the morning from a marijuana coffee shop than pull out of a bar at 2AM.

I recently got assaulted by a group of random guys after leaving a bar at 2AM. Now I have a synthetic polymer/titanium implant in my face to repair the shattered orbital floor and rim of my left eye socket. My eye does not close all the way now and I have to undergo a second surgery to repair that..

But hey, I still drink...Just gotta be careful and make wise decisions. That was my eye opener.
