No im not taking it personal. Youre right, i'm on coops while in school, so i can relate when it comes to real world experiences. All i was saying is that ideas and theories such as pipelining is not easy.

By the way alittle off topic, have any of you read the article about some guy that found a way to take the clock out of the processor?
Asynchronous chips? Is that what the article was talking about? That idea has been around for a long time and it'll change everything. I suggest getting the MIT mag technology review, I read about these chips 3 or 4 years ago. You'll find it truly amazing! They are working on processors using light on silicon. That will change the world.

more clueless users use Windows than Unix, you have made a system which is more vulnerable to hacking and more vulnerable to attacks based on user ignorance and social conditioning.

Any OS can be defeated by its own sysadmin, and in the PC world we are all our own sysadmins.
This is the true problem!

i wouldnt call them idiotic just yet. Give it a couple years. Maybe im reading into this too much, but if you look at the progression of computers more specifically game consoles, you will see a rapid progression towards the internet. Having said that, i can see a day where something like game consoles will be the only computer needed for personal use. The OS or atleast system files will be protected by the server monitoring the console. Basically, xbox live. As far as viruses and hackablity, the xbox is the hardest to break into or hack without changing the hardware.
The whole "internet appliance" thing has been around a lot longer than the Xbox. People keep trying, but so far it hasn't worked. In fact, MS alone has tried several different ways.

As for the Xbox demonstrating that PCs are on their way out, to my eye what it demonstrates is that MS thinks traditional game consoles are on their way out, and are going to be replaced by specialized PCs.

Besides, even MS admits that the Xbox costs more to make than they are selling it for. It always has. It is a loss leader for game sales, not a viable hardware business. (Which is why they were quite unhappy when it was discovered that you could buy an Xbox for <$200 and then run linux on it...)

Did they have a working chip 3-4 years ago? I think the article i was reading said it will speed the CPU up by like 10 times. That is some serious shit.

Still trying to find a way to make it all happen, it will but we're still waiting for the tech to become cheap enough.

Nope only a semi-working one. Is there a working one now? Light or Async?

The big difference is that xbox live works. (although not totally a internet managed OS)

"As for the Xbox demonstrating that PCs are on their way out, to my eye what it demonstrates is that MS thinks traditional game consoles are on their way out, and are going to be replaced by specialized PCs."

Same difference. Xbox 360 and even the xbox where "Specialized Pcs" which is why the mod chip market was booming.

And why they couldn't cut down on production costs and had an unprofitable gaming division...

His was Async. Ok i found the magazine.

It was in Technology Review MIT's magazine of innovation

He basically used short wires instead of a clock to alert for sequential instructions.
