Modern Tipping Practices are WRONG
As a server i have little respect for those who feel they need not tip well because they don't like how the system works, or think they can't afford to tip. If you don't like America's tipping culture, go to a place where tipping is not customary. If you cant afford to tip don't go out to eat.
I have to tip out 4.5 percent of my sales, and i am automatically taxed on the assumption that i make at least 10 percent of my sales as income. So if someone tips me less than 14.5 percent, I am getting taxed on income i didn't make. If for example i get stiffed on a $200 check i have lost $9 plus tax on $30 that i didn't make.
Thankfully most people understand that tipping is my income, not a "bonus" for good service. However there are always those cheap bastards who don't tip as a matter of "principal" because they "don't like the system." Its those pitiful people who should stay home and enjoy a TV dinner. As someone mentioned, the OP sounds like the sleazy thief in reservoir dogs who objected to tipping.
