In other words, sometimes it doesn't matter what is actually said. The important parts are 1) the intent behind the words, and 2) how they are received. (In my opinion, part 1 being far, far more important. However, if Imus had instead called them the "picayune spinsters" with the same intent as what he really said it still would have been just as derogatory - it just wouldn't have been nearly as consequential because the part 2 impact would have likely been far less.)

ps - did any of you know that "canned goods" is a synonym for "maiden"?

Wouldn't that be an (archaic) euphamism?

However, if you take the current state of "sexual harrassment" in the workplace, part 1 matters not at all and part 2 is the only thing that matters.

If someone feels uncomfortable because you kissed your wife at work, that's sexual harrassment. Even if you didn't mean anything by it.

It's a slippery slope. Some of it, I feel like people should grow a pair. Other times, it's the only recourse that people have.

Very true there Ckit! But with todays easily offended and overly sensitive society, I have found that no one can sue or get offended over silence, I just keep it zipped unless its directly related to a professional agenda. Being that Im in a high position in a hospital system, people are always listening very closely.
