Thanks all. I think I am just going to get a revolver (brand/model yet to be determined) and leave it in a bedside drawer. I'm not Niko Belic from Grand Theft Auto, so I don't need to walk around Liberty City with it. I just want it for peace of mind and home protection.

I imagine if I posted this thread on a Ford F150 fansite, the string would be 49 pages long.
If you are just going for something to protect you at home, I definitely say 12 gauge shotgun over any sort of handgun.

I've got a Glock 35 for shooting at the range, a pretty inexpensive and fun target pistol that still carries a decent caliber if I need it to save my life. It sits in my bedside drawer as well, but if someone breaks into my house at night, I'm definitely reaching for my 12 gauge first.

Pistols definitely cool to own and the only choice if you need to conceal it, but in my house, in the dark, in a tough situation, a 12 gauge is a weapon you shouldn't do without. Many people still try to make a case for handguns for home defense, and I agree if you've already got a long gun, a pistol will make a good backup weapon.

I believe this advice from someone who teaches a CCW class sums it up well.

"ALL HANDGUNS SUCK!"

The site is a good read overall.

I think the question you should be asking is not whether to get a shotgun, but rather what kind of 12 guage you should get.

The ONLY problem with a 12 ga is how tough it is to answer the door without spooking the crap out of people. With a handgun you just hold it behind you, no harm no foul.

The problem I have with the Glock is they have no slide lock safety. Other than that they are great guns, reliable, low maintanance, and affordable.

Try a .45 (1911) like Kimber, SigSauer or Springfield. Great power, very manageble.

But get a 12 gauge pump (nothing is more intimidaitng than the CHOOK-CHUK of shotgun loading). The benefit of a shotgun is the spray effect for easier justice dipsensing, and the shot won't go through a wall and kill your kids/neighbor.
