I love my Mac - it works, and doesn't try to phone home every time it gets PMS (unlike my PC).

I kinda hate Apple - They have problems. I work on some of them, albeit a little indirectly. Christ, people are lazy.

That's just me.

The biggest problem that I have is precisely what Nunco says

A PC fan who says "I dont like macs" gets lamblasted for his idiocy, he doesnt know any better, etc etc etc. If they try to prove the reason behind their opinion, they just "dont understand why a mac is better."

the realism I usually experience is that the "real" Mac fanbois arent just fanbois, they're absolute zealots ready to go to war over their perceived superiority in the PC space.

That being said, I think MacOS is a fine example of an OS. I think it works well for what it is. I still prefer Win7.

I must be a mac hater
Oh come on

So you're saying a "PC" person can say that macs sucks for whatever reason but when an apple guy says microsoft sucks, he's a zealot...? You don't catch the double standard there?

I'm primarly on "PC" forums vs mac forums and I can say first hand there are an equal amount of retarded people on both sides of the fence.

For the record I have 2 win7 desktops, 1 mac mini, 1 macbook pro, and 1 windows xp laptop and I love them all

I will say in partial defense of Sabre, that around here (Silicon Valley, where this shit gets both sorted out and convoluted at the same time), that there were countless Volvo wagons for years that had Apple stickers when the company was considered all but completely dead. The zealots had been taunting their usability since the Lisa.

. . . now, they think they've gotten their day, despite OSX only bearing a vague resemblance to 8 or 9 on the surface. . . we'll ignore the guts of OSX

No, I specifically said the realism that I usually experience

That doesnt necessarily mean they all are that way. I know several mac users that arent. They have a mac, they like it, end of story.

But I ALSO know MANY more who are fanatical about it and will go off the deep end if you suggest anything counter to their belief.

i.e. a zealot.

"iPods are the best!!!" - "Yeah, they're ok, but I prefer my XXXX" - "AAGGH YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU"RE TALKING ABOUT!!"

"I love my iPhone!" - "I tend to prefer my XXXX" - "iPhone is the best! Your XXXX Sucks!"

Just to throw out some very generic examples.
I've experienced this first hand.

I use them (macs), I like them ok.
I'd rather use a PC. I feel I am more productive on them. I've been told that it's because I just dont spend enough time with OSX (uhhh, ok?) or that I'm just not using it right (uhh, ok) yadda yadda.

I tease about it from time to time, usually in reference to the stereotypes that mac users have created for themselves in the 20-30 years they've used them (just look in the computer forum here) but some things are simply too ridiculous NOT to. And yes, that applies to both sides. PCs are not immune to much of the same thing. I agree with you there.

Much like the old days of "G5 CPU is teh fast0rs!"

Until it was replaced with an Intel chip...

Then the argument just sort of disappeared never to be remembered

Why does the pic talk about Office 2007 costing $280, when Apple is selling something completely different, Office Mac 2008 Business Edition, which on Microsoft's website is listed at $399.95?

Which led me to doubt some of the other claims in the pic.
To verify on my own, I looked at the currently offered Mac Pro. The $2499 version comes with a single 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem." Upgrading to a 3.2GHz version is an extra $400. Going to NewEgg:
Intel Xeon X5560 Nehalem 2.8GHz LGA 1366 95W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80602X5560 - $1229.49
Intel Xeon W5580 Nehalem 3.2GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80602W5580 - $1674.99
Price difference - $445.50.

Check that out. Apple is cheaper than NewEgg. Who'd a thunk it.

Further, the pic talks about the "higest rated" RAID controller on NewEgg costing just over $300, compared to Apple's $700. The reality is that there are many RAID cards on NewEgg with their highest rating of 5 stars, and their prices range from $59.99 to $1229.99. Without knowing the exact model Apple uses, it's impossible to determined if its overpriced or super discounted.

Also, Apple currently offers additional TB HDDs for $150. Looking at NewEgg again, WD Caviar drives in that capacity range from $74.99 to $289.99 depending on model. Oh, and Apple's price of $1400 for a 512GB Toshiba SSD is exactly the same as the cheapest Kingston SSD NewEgg sells. If found exactly one vendor via Google Shopping that sells the exact same SSD as Apple includes (Toshiba THNS512GG8BBAA) and they say normal price is $2474.92, and they offer it at the discounted price of $1499.95 - a hundred bucks more than Apple.

Etc. I'm not going to bother looking at more. The pic is clearly incorrect at nearly every point.

So I guess somebody can claim that all Apple hardware is overpriced compared to what you pay at NewEgg and such, but only if they're either ignorant of outright lying. Some things are more expensive from Apple, I'm sure, but plenty of things appear to be the same. YMMV.

You aren't even comparing the same models. Just because Apple says its a 2.8Ghz and 3.2Ghz does make it a X5560 or W5580 processor respectively. In actually, they are using W3530 and W3565 processors. Which according to Newegg goes for $315 and $600. So the actual prices difference from Newegg is $285, not $445.

Thanks for doing that leg work. I had a hunch that the prices couldn't be *that* out of whack, though it was plausible.

FWIW, I have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed, so I can do anything I want and it looks great. Sure I paid a little more than for an Acer that can do much the same, but I did comparison-shop equivalent "pretty" laptops and honestly felt fine about the price I was paying compared to models from Dell and Sony. I really like the unibody aluminum - but, it was worth it for me.

Perhaps we can agree on some middle ground: Windows Vista was awful; Windows 7 is superb; and Snow Leopard does not play well with games.

Truce?

The SSD that Apple sells is basically one generation back. It is a 43nm part while the Kingston SSD is a 32nm part.

I could go on, but why bother.
