Do they have SMS in the US? They don't use GSM so maybe if they do have a short message service it has a different name.

GSM is available here. Not widely available, but it is growing. I'm using it here in Chicago. I don't use SMS that much though.

I think the other networks in the U.S. have their own short messaging capabilities too.

Also, my dad was able to use his service (from Malaysia) here (using his own SIM card and a borrowed tri-band phone). We were able to get service almost all the way from here to Florida and back.

Australians (at least the younger ones) are SMS freaks. The kids tend to use it instead of voice.
