Question for the asian bun-eaters
Ha ha ha... funny question.
When I was growing up, I used to peel the skin off of "leen-yoong bao" just like your wife does, but it was more of a "playing with my food" thing. I just really liked how the outer layer peeled off so cleanly. I don't do it anymore
.
Oh, and nobody else in my family does/did that as far as I know.

I'm ABC also, cantonese and chiuchow. I've seen a person peel off the outside of a bao, but that just seems odd to me. BTW, I can't seem to recall any chinese baos stuffed with veggies. Most are w/meat or some sweet paste. Damn, I'm hungry now!

Ok good thread. Now I have a question:
what are those little "bun" like things found on some Chinese buffets? they are usually covered in sesame seeds and usually filled with a black bean paste (sweet). When made fresh, they are too hot to consume for at least 20 minutes and will blister your face off if you try to eat them too soon.
them sheeits is way yummy yo!!!!!

I can relate to this, I have always learned from my parents to peel the outer side of the bun before eating it. Specially the white bun with bbq pork or any other filling. My parents say the outer layer can be dirty or other people have touched it so its best to peel it off. I think its more of a paranoia thing more than anything traditional.
BTW, I am ABC and Cantonese. From this thread alone, I'm seeing a pattern of Cantonese people peeling the skin off, maybe its a Hong Kong/Guang Dong thing not trusting China

I'm sooo glad that you guys cleared up what an ABC was.
I was thinking "Ass Balls Connection", and was trying to figure out why anyone would liken themselves to that.
lol
Back on topic. I've had some of those pork bun things. I only peel the paper off, same with everyone I've ever seen eat them.

I'm an ABC in HK right now. I have seen some mainlanders do it as well as some honkies do it, but as people said, I think its more of a preference thing.
Also witht eh Cantonese with ABC having an accent, It depends on where you grow up, the chinese community around you. For me I grew up in AZ where ther was 5 asian epople period in my whole elementary school. So of course I didnt speka chinese at all and ultimately lost it since I wanted to 'fit' in.. HAHA now I'm the 'whitest' ABC my friends here in HK have seen, and they are international or have gone to international HS and Colleges.
My favorites.. cha siu chan bao and cha siu sou... but the gai mai bao is pretty damn good as well.. speaking of dimsum, the dan tat and the loh pak goh here is phenomenal hahahah
