Question for the asian bun-eaters
yeah, it's just personal preference and there is no right or wrong. i see many people not eat the outer crust of pizza and i think that's weird, but hey, to each his own. if she genuninely doesn't like the outer layer then there's nothing wrong with her peeling it off. if, on the other hand, she thinks that's the way you're supposed to eat it, then she's coocoo.
Ok good thread. Now I have a question:
what are those little "bun" like things found on some Chinese buffets? they are usually covered in sesame seeds and usually filled with a black bean paste (sweet). When made fresh, they are too hot to consume for at least 20 minutes and will blister your face off if you try to eat them too soon.
them sheeits is way yummy yo!!!!!

Why peel the outside of the bun off? Is it for sanitary reasons?

What does not kill you makes you stronger.
I believe this phenomenon happened during the cultural revolution. Nationalists were more wealthy and in turn were more likely to value being hygienic. Buying steamed buns off the street could very give one food poisoning, in an attempt avoid the germs from all the people handling the buns they would strip the skin off of the buns; like some people do with fruit. Unlike hard fruit you can't wash it or you'll end up with a soggy mess.
