I think the deathtoll for Korea was around 50,000 for American forces. Not sure how many south koreans? Mcarthur was pretty popular though during the ww2 and post ww2 era. Remember he was the guy who won back the pacific in world war 2 against the Japanese. Then he did the end of the war event on the Battleship BB-62 USS Missouri Iowa class battleship. The Japanese people loved him also. He wanted to basically wipe out everybody though. (communists) He argued with the current president saying that he wanted to use nuclear bombs on China. He did get fired but there was much upset in the U.S. and Mcarthur got the biggest parade ever in NY city for his homecoming. Because of this firing the party didnt get relected next term I belive.

I think the U.S was mainly by itself. It might have had other help from the UN but it was largely them alone(correct me if I'm wrong).

I never knew Taiwan was that close to China? Building a bridge would take time and that bridge could be knocked out and then that whole supply chain stops. Just to many variables. When you refer to artillery, your probably mentioning short to medium range missles as I think cannons or shells don't have the capacity to go that far. Missles can be countered up to a point. Station Patriot missle batterries all over the island and on ships. These are the same ones used to knock out scuds. They are 1000 times better now compard to previous generations in accuracy and power.

If I were China this is how I would win...
Stage a Military excercise on the western border as to not to raise suspicions from satelite ops and other sources. Get your troops and equipment ready about 100,000 to take the Island without any help from the U.S. Load them onto transports, cargo planes anything that can carry troops. Then out of nowhere attack. This has to be a surprise attack coming from no where and has to be done fast. There will be light resistance due to shock and the Taiwan army without aid could not withstand 100,000 troops. Then immedately back those troops up with more troops and dig in. That would be how China would win Taiwan. No nation could go back in there without destorying the whole island due to fighting. Congress etc would argue what to do and by then it would be to late.

Again this scenario would have to be perfect to be accomplished. Highly unlikely that China could find that many reliable ships. Unlikely that Intellegince and satelite photos would ignore this buildup. If this build up was foreseen, then the U.S stations its pacific fleet near Taiwan and then China can't do shit against out carriers and missle frigates and our subs.......

yea seriously... N. Korean commandos are pretty hardcore- ever watch Shiri??

Silver- I did not mean an actual bridge. I meant a system of transports which are able to move large bodies of troops, silmilar to island hopping.

In the korean war, the US provided most of the troops- however, there were over 10,000 non-American casualties- so its no small number. Along with that, there were several key supply details which were headed up by other nations.

US lost 140,000 troops. Of this I'm pretty sure.

Two years ago(?), China dropped an empty bomb right in the center of Taipei. I don't know if you remember, but it was a demonstration of how easily China is able to attack Taiwan.

Sirens went off in Taiwan for everyone to take cover. No US antimissle systems went off, no pacific fleet mobilized, and no retaliation occurred... just an empty bombshell hitting the street with a *clang*.

Lemme find the article for you, i'll post it up

i seriously doubt that China will drop an bomb, even an empty bomb on another country. That can be grounds for war.

Like Mingster, i keep up with news in Taiwan and since my parents both live and work in taiwan, i didn't hear anything about it...

Sen, please provide your info.. i would like to read this so call empty bombing.

Mingster, never knew Taiwans army was that big. My point of reference was at a recent airshow which discussed the low # of jets that Taiwan had. Scratch that 100,000 and bump it to 500,000 at a min for a sucessful assault. How well armed is Taiwans military? Is it rigourous training or a militia armed with automatic rifles? Do they have armor units? If so are they advanced M1A1s or jsut m60s? Mechanized units? Bradleys or old M-113s? I'm sure they have attack Uh-1 hueys, but do they have apaches or super Cobras? Technology can def help an army win a battle or withstand an invasion. I know Taiwan has alot of money but do they put it into defense?

To contrast this in WW2 the germans were geniuses in Armor and Tank design. The Panzer tanks were almost unstoppable. The American forces put out Sherman tanks. The 75mm shells would bounce right off the heavy armor off the German tanks. The kill ratio was....I believe 30 sherman tanks to one heavy panzer tank so essantially 1:30. So technology can be good up to a point. But after that it just becomes a #s game.

What would also be interesting is how many people in Taiwan would actually fight against China? The recent re election had almost a 50% split.
