well, this is a topic not too many on this board knows or care about, i guess. just like if you were talking about some north african island wanting to separate from another country...pretty uninteresting, and it's not like we're calling people names - most of us are reciting history (our version of it) + personal experience.

Sen: your POV is shared by most of the mainland chinese. i have no love for the japanese of WWII, but i do love my japanese friends in college. they had nothing to do with the atrocities committed, nor did my friends cause my grandma to contract TB while hiding in a bomb shelter (other japanese did). many taiwanese girls (or HK girls) would rather slit their wrists than go out with a mainlander, but it'll be fast changing once their socio-economical status improve. besides, in 10 years or less there will be 1.27 man for every 1 girl in china, there will be plenty of horny single guys.

up until about 3 years ago, i had a very negative view towards mainlanders (save for a few whom i've met at clubs) due to the propaganda machine that drilled into me while i was a child in Taiwan, but also from what i saw while growing up here in LA - you see them a lot nowadays in the greater LA area: shitty suits (with pants that ends on the ankles), black shoes, and WHITE SOCKS. funky ass hair style (oily as hell from NOT WASHING IT DAILY + DANDRUFF), smoking constantly w/godawful BO, hawking and spitting everywhere like it was their backyard, and generally making chinese LOOK BAD. now mind you that's my american POV looking at these people, but to them that's probably perfectly sexy however, i've met plenty of sophisticated, nice, and genuine people from china, in china, that i believe there is hope for the race, but it'll take generations to improve.

the MPs in Taiwan are not as hardcore anymore - it's not a time for idealism these days you see. however, there still is a battalion of MPs stationed around the palace, also a select group of volunteer MPs called the "Black Hawks" who guards the president. they probably suck badly cuz of the assassination incident a short while back.

anyway, kaiwang, aren't you chinese? where from?

My parents and their parents, 100% taiwanese, love the japanese. They can't stand anyone from the mainland and have forbid me from marrying any mainlander.

I didn't understand it until i asked them about it, because everyone things that the Chinese and Japanese hated each other. Most older Taiwanese folks love the Japanese because they were the ones who started schools, built roads, and basically got Taiwan started to the road of prosperity.

Mainland Chinese people came over and basically ruined everything by being corrupt and assulting the natives. That is why for my parents and relatives, they hate Mainlanders.
