Tipping
There seems to be something with waiters wanting that free extra bundle of cash at the end of the night. They're being paid to do the service well. They'd get fired anywhere if they didn't treat customers or clients properly. Tipping is such a stupid western civilization tradition. Most people do it to look good, not because they feel like giving more money for something that was already paid for.
No where in Asia is tipping expected. I tipped the chauffer who drove me from the airport to the hotel when I went to Taiwan and he declined. I left more than the required amount at the hotel restaurant and left. The waittress came running after me with my change. They get paid for providing a service and shouldn't expect to do a sloppy job if the customer doesn't give them more money than their employer charges. That really is extortion.
In the case of our waiter friend above, why shouldn't a teacher get tipped for spending extra time with a student? Would our sponsors require tip according to how many emails you sent him inquiring about products? Maybe a police officer should get tipped for rescuing someone? Should a fire fighter put some as last priority to be saved from a burning building because he looks like he won't tip? These are all services people provide for your community which far outweighs a waiter's importance. If the drinks were available for me to get, I'd get it myself.
Once again, tipping is just a way of saving face or gaining respect from the person's dinner guest(s). Otherwise tipping wouldn't only be expected at places of luxury and relaxation, when you're with friends, collegues, family, or someone you're trying to get with.

seriously guys, DONT GO OUT TO EAT if you cant tip decently. That is not saying to tip low if your server is an asss, but dont go out expecting to tip $2 on a $30 meal when the service is excellent. Go to burgerking if your that cheap, or save up. People in other countries may not get tipped as well but they do get paid more per hour (depending on the place). I do not agree on implementing a mandatory 20% tipping, but do NOT set your cheap ass foot in a restaurant if you CAN NOT COMPREHEND THE CUSOMARY TIPPING. Do you NOT understand that people make a living off of this? You are wasting their time to tip them that low. And if I were sitting next to you I'd get up and say something. I have a friend that works at Chili's. Her table spent $99 dollars, they left $100. I can not fathom how somebody can do this and not feel bad. Their service was fine, food came fast, food was correct. WHY? oh and those super cheap people that are oh so rich, are asssholes...just try to switch your position with people ever once in a while and maybe your perspective will change a little and make this world a little more enjoyable to live in. end rant/
Like I said before, the price I am paying for the food includes getting it to my table. Once you get over that basic principle then see where you fit into the equation and make yourself worth an extra tip. This is the part that waiters want to overlook.
As to paying a gratuity when the kitchen has messed up? HELL NO!!! So that a tip was warranted, a waiter would have to add service. Wouldn't that be checking the order to see if it was right? I mean the waiter took the order and is the one that had the conversation with the customer so is the person in the best position to know what the customer wanted. Oh wait, I forgot, waiters never make misteaks when they take an order.
Oh, and you used the words CUSTOMARY TIPPING. You need to remember that. It is not mandatory under ANY circumstances.
And then there's the Buffets with the sign saying please tip your waiter when all they do is show you to the table, maybe explain how the restaurant runs and bring you the first drink. You get your own food and fill up your glass the rest of the time.

Mandatory tipping is out of the out of the question. I would never eat at a restaurant that does that. I'm already poor enough. I have to pay for 2 people already whenever I eat (me and my dates). $50 +$10 tip? Maybe after I graduate and make $. Right now I have an average of $2 tip on anything below $30 and $5 tip on anything above $30. = ( I'm cheap yeah...but if you really take notice, some of the richest people are the cheapest people. How did they become so rich? They don't spend $ on things they don't have to pay for!
Yeah, I got a friend who did valet for awhile in college. He told me stories about kids taking the cars out for a joy ride and only somtimes get caught. One took it his friend's to show off as his car and got it back in time to return the car. Valets are really the worst. They drive it like they don't own it, which they don't, but it's a good term to use for how they treat the cars.
My friend told me if the customers wanted the cars up front so they won't have to wait for it later, the valets imply to the customer that it's an extra $20 fee even though they're not allowed to do that. If the customer feels that it's extortion and decide not to do it, the valets usually get pissed cuz they missed out on an extra $20s to pocket. Hence, they treat the car like shit. Yeah you'll see valets run their ass of to fetch your car and I suppose that deserves tip since running isn't in the job description, but trusting your car to someone who has always wanted to drive your car is rather scary.

Dude, you are a cheap piece of shit. Tipping is a part of the service industry in American culture, social rejects like you shouldn't go out to eat at all.
You could follow that thought further and ask why don't you pay your wife for sex or your girlfriend for a kiss . . . . . wait that would be whoring, but that's exactly how a great many people feel about the whole tip issue.
In any industry if you want to get paid you must furnish more service/work than you cost. If you don't then the boss can't afford to keep you around. Think of the customer as your boss and work to furnish them with more service and you will get paid, but don't expect that you are entitled to pay just because you exist.

I'm already paying for the service in my parking fee. Now if parking were free then I'd see the need to pay the attendant for exceptional service.
I always found it funny how differnt people tip. one time i had a guy in a rusted honda civic give me a 10 dollar tip, and a guy in a 80k$ mercedes give me a handfull of change

I bartended my sophmore year of college and it was great, but you always got the occasional cheap skate and you better believe that he wasn't getting another drink from me if he skimped on me once. One thing you ARE right about is how rich people seem to be the cheapest pieces of shit alive. You know what, they might be super rich, but the reputation for being cheap is a scarlet letter, just ask George Constanza
So you treat a customer like ass if they don't tip at the bar? It's customary to tip yeah, but where in your job description did it say that it's open season on the customer who doesn't tip? People only do it at bars so they don't get shit from you guys. You poured me a $9 shot of henny and a coke chaser. How much tip do you expect from that? I'll bet $3. Two of my bartender friends tell me that's what they expect at the clubs they work at. 33.3%?! Tip percentage just keeps going up huh? No matter how you look at it, you're just expecting free money. That is IF you expect tip.
For others who work their ass off to be pleasant and attentive, yeah, I have been known to give proper tip. So keep up the good work.

my advice is to just save your self the parking fee, the valet tip and possibly car damage/ car being abused, and just park it yourself.
