Is tipping required for take out?

^ No offense but you obviously don't know anything about the serving industry.

Servers get paid about 2 dollars an hour from the restaurant. These 2 dollars an hour are simply to offset taxes. When they recieve their actual check it ends up being literally a dollar to ten dollars.

This means that they make all their money off tips. I'm sure many others on here can vouch for it
Then they can get a different job. The only reason the restaurants can get away with paying them so little is because so many people actually do tip these people. It's ridiculous that there is an expectation to tip people that throw your food in a bag.

I agree. Tipping is getting out of hand. I wonder if most people even know what a the reason for a "TIP" is. Most workers expect it. My take on it. NO/BAD SERVICE = NO TIP.

Bummer. That must mean waiters in Texas are either extremely attentive or pissed off like all hell.
a good waiter moves up in the world of restaurants to the higher scale places where the average bill is $30-$50 a head. when you work at a place like that, money isn't an issue. but those positions are reserved for the waiters that master their craft.

personally, I have a system devised for my own use. I start at 15%:
- if my glass stays empty for too long, dock the tip.
- if I'm waiting more than 10-15 minutes for the waiter to take my drink order, dock the tip (unless there's a mad rush)
- if my order is screwed up on the input side, dock the tip.
- if the waiter isn't personable, dock the tip.

however:
- if the waiter can take my order without writing it down, and gets it right, tip goes up.
- if the waiter goes above and beyond, maybe makes a good food/drink suggestion, or hooks up desert, the tip goes up.
- if the waiter is friendly enough to start conversation, and doesn't over-do it, tip goes up.

and finally:
- if the order is screwed up on the cook's side (ie, over/under cooked), tip isn't effected.
- if the waiter over-does conversation (keeps me from eating), tip isn't effected.
- if silverware/dishes are dirty, I complain to the waiter/manager, but tip isn't effected.

i love threads like this because i get all worked up because i can not believe some of you dont think it is expected. Your mothers raised you better than that!!!!
But most of all, you drive an S2000!!! You can afford a few bucks to anyone who serves you.

I tip ANYTIME someone provides a service for me. The sandwich delivery guy "jimmy johns" if any of you know about them, you order a sandwich online, and in 20 minutes or less its at my door, 5 bucks for the delivery guy or girl.
The sonic girl, a few bucks. the guy who buffs my car, 20 or 40.
Take out should be no different.
The quality of the food should never reflect the tip, because the delivery person/waitress is NOT the cook. Dont base it on that! If they do their job, hook them up. Some stuff is not in their hands.

If you stiff once, you get remember believe it or not and it will reflect many things in the future. The quality of food, the attitude they have, and how fast you get it next time. If you are a repeat customer, I am sure they will make a note on the computer next time you place an order to warn their other employees of your tipping abilities or lack there of.

My mother raised me to get an education and be smart enough to choose a career where I would make decent money. BTW an s2000 is no luxury/status vehicle; it also has no bearing on this particular discussion.

I tip very well at restaurants that I frequent, but refuse to do so for to-go orders or for poor service. Bottom line is, tips are earned. It sounds like you are keeping our economy afloat on your tips alone!

first of all. i am pretty sure the software programs that run on the registers don't have a little check box for problematic customers. i am gonna call you out on that and say u made that part up.

also, the waiting staff are not the only people that know how to play passive aggressive games.

if the food takes forever to come out, i will eat it, ask for the manager, complain, then refuse to pay. wuts gonna happen to the waiter now?

I only tip for carry-out at the "family" run joints.
