Not to drift too far astray, but I'm not aware of any absolute causes...?

Anyway, tongue rings are, to me, no big deal. However, to say they are not conspicuous isn't quite right. Granted, they're not as conspicuous as, say, electric blue hair or a tattoo on your forehead, but they ARE noticeable. Still, I don't think they're that big a deal and as long as a person makes the decision taking into account how it may affect aspects of their life...
