Default what are the benefits to being married

in a society where divorce is high and life complicated, one may hesitate before getting married. the negatives of marriage are obvious, but what do you think the real world befits are compared to not being married? tax advantages don't count. or do you think it's better to hold off on marriage?

The benefits vary based on how you live your life.

Are you Catholic, for example? Then you can have sex without buring in hell for eternity. (Probably a gross exageration.) I'm sure there are various other religious implications I'm ignorant of, however.

From a legal standpoint, you can claim your spouse on your health insurance. (Although some companies now allow opposite-sex domestic partners, in additional to same-sex domestic partners.) Which is very important if your spouse doesn't work. Your spouse also has automatic legal control over your affairs if you are incapacitated or something (well, I suppose that could be both good and bad.)

Beyond the above, I can't think of any practical advantages to marriage, beyond what it means to the two people involved.
