Default what would you do?

ok, my company is messed up when it comes to time worked. i'm wondering what you guys would do in this situation. hopefully i can explain this okay...

background...i've worked for my company, right out of college, for 4 years this month. i was a co-op here before that while i was in college, finished school, then came to work here. if you look at the date i first started as a co-op until now, it's been over 5-1/2 years. we start out with 3 weeks vacation, but after five years of working here, we get another week. here's where it gets messed up. this past winter, my boss recognized me as being an employee for five years, and they gave me the 5 year gift package and everything. i haven't gotten the extra week of vacation yet though. alright...as far as i figured, i've only been here 4 years. now, they post up monthly flyers of all the month's anniversaries and i'm on there as 4 years....fine, whatever.

now, another guy i work with, a friend of mine, is in a similar situation. he started as a co-op 6 months after me, so since his start, it's been 5 years. he just got the 5 year gift pack and everything...PLUS, he got his extra week of vacation. the problem is, he went to work with another company after college and only recently came here about a year and a half ago. so he only has about 2 years of actually working time here.

he's a friend, so i don't want to screw him, but fuk!, if he's getting an extra week of vacation now, i sure as shit want that too! what should i do?

Simple. Contact your HR department's benefits coordinator if your company's that big. If it isn't go to your boss, tell him the situation. Give him a week to take action, after a week and no action. Go above him.

Well I know the job market sucks and everything, but if it is anything like it used to be for IT people, just explain it and you'll get your extra week. My brother is a pretty solid IT guy and he told me a couple years ago his company was having such a hard time getting decent programmers that they were willing to take any degree and train if they thought you had half a brain.

He was supervising a team and they would hire someone who was worthless and my brother had to pick up the slack. He would tell his boss "Its really hard to work with X, she does not seem to know anything about computers and keeps screwing up the system." His boss would say "I know, how about an extra $10,000?"

He said he would every time he went to his boss with an issue they would throw a raise at him. More than doubled his salary first year. I would think a weeks vacation is no big deal.

Another guy I know who freelances but used to work for a computer consulting firm was given a $200 bonus to steal a company directory at each company he was placed at so the owner of the consulting firm could call and recruit more IT people.

I should have picked that major over accounting.

Just like tapout said, contact HR. It never hurts to ask.

Yeah, I'd just point it out to your boss. There's no need to bring up the fact that your friend got the extra week, therefore there's no need to worry about "screwing him." Just tell your boss that you've been there 5 years, but you're not getting the extra week. Either he'll take care of it for you or tell you the right person (HR) that you can talk to. No big deal.
