why do indians...
yeah, i've actually done that. i politely asked one of my regular and his answer was, "we dont want to wait." hm... but making us wait is cool?
oh, and i love those "um, we're in a rush, so can u make our food quick? we have a _____ to catch." after busting balls to get their food out before the people who got there earlier, they sit there for another hour chatting after they finish. lol wth
....
as for eating late. i'm in college so my eating habits are all over the place. but i'm aware that if a place is going to close in 10 minutes, i rather not cause them trouble, especially if they are already cleaning up. i wish more people can acknowledge this.

As for their tip... your lucky to get the 10%..... I wouldn't complain.
Tim
Well, either way I feel for you. I hated it when people would pop in right before closing. I always feel bad when I go somewhere just before closing because I know how it feels. You are tired and just want to go home by then.
yeah... not sure what "lucky to get 10%" means. the restaurant is classy, not a quick food joint. avg dinner check for a family of 4 is at least 50+, so getting 5$ for a 50$ tab is pretty bad.
i work at takhrai thai. scripps/poway area.

Neither... I was merely making a comment that a tip is a tip and even though it is 10% it's better than nothing. Considering the situation, imagine if they didn't tip at all.
Tips are subjective at best, so anytime you receive one, regardless of amount, it's more than you had before.
Regardless of race, if your assuming they are rude to come in so close to closing, then you wouldn't be surprised to see they didn't leave you a tip either right? You'd be pissed but not surprised. That's why, I'm saying that if they are rude people to eat so late, and yet they still tip 10%..... it's better than being rude people overall and not tipping at all.

Another point I'd that they don't realize they are being rude.
I don't think someone is being rude by coming in before closing. If your restaurant is open, it's open. If a restaurant claims to be open until say 11pm, if you REALLY want to be closed at 11pm, then you need to have last seating at 10. If you seat someone at 10:48, you can't expect to close by 11. The OP didn't think they were rude for coming in late. He was just saying that having to stay later, AND getting a shitty tip for it is a slap in the face.
Like it or not, tipping is a societal standard, and all areas of the country have that standard pegged to a number. In NY, that number is 15-20%. One should not feel "lucky" to get a tip. You came in, you ate and recieved service, you tip. Granted, if there was something wrong with the service, then tip accordingly, but if nothing was wrong, and you leave a shitty tip, they you are the one who is being rude.
To the OP. If this happens often, have the manager go to the table and ask if everything is ok with the service. If everything was fine, they will ask why. The manager can then tell the table that their tip hinted that there was something wrong with the service, as it's rather low.
