wow... a P4 3.4 Extreme edition being more affordable huh? you sure about that..

Lets see, the CPU ALONE is over 1k... the fast memory, is surely another 300 AT LEAST... lets not count the nice motherboard that must go with that and the nice video card that must also go with that... after all is said and done.. what you have? at least a nice 2k.. AT LEAST. and thats something that you build yourself... AKA, no warranty or service..

a computer like yours goes for over 3k at most retailers and builders..

Here's the specs on something that would EASILY compete (if not beat) that extreme edition

Has anyone mentioned TCO? Total Cost of Ownership? There are plenty of web sites to shed some light on this. Add in the cost of your downtime for cleaning of viruses, spyware, malware and ...the price issue becomes closer.

I always find it funny that some of you paid $32K for a premium sports car (you could have bought a Miata after all (or numerous other low cost leaders..) for what 10-12K less and have almost (relativley) the same preformance.....but you cant justify spending a little extra for a more elegant, complete computing situation?

Bottom line is I have been an "everyday" Mac user since 1986...I run our small family business completely on Macs, Accounting, Word Processing, Spreadsheet, design work, web work, email, surfing for "research" etc,... I have NEVER owned a Windows computer! Sure It costs our business more money to have a pretty 17" Apple laptop but quite frankly the operating system NEVER gets in my way!

My best friend who is a Dr. runs his office on Dells. He has just sent his main DELL in for service for the second time in 2 weeks to de- it from a malicious spyware/ad-ware corruption issue. Dells contention is that this really isnt their forte nor responsibility to fix computers disabled due to spyware, etc. (back to the hardware blaming the software, and the software blaming the hardware, again doesnt happen with Apple!) However for good will they are doing it. He is fed up....the darn thing is less than 2 years old and now reduced to a bucket of bolts and plastic.

Decembers Consumer Reports has a great cover article (mind you CR has NEVER been a big Apple fan) : Unspectacular results for Intel's new processor. Plus 59,940 reasons to reconsider Macs....yes 59,000 and growing viruses for Windows and about 60 at last count for Mac OsX.

http://www.macnn.com/news/26856

"Inside the issue, Consumer Reports writes, " In this atmosphere of low expectations, Apple Computer has actually raised its support satisfaction for desktop computers over the past three years to levels well above all competitors, while offering the most reliable desktop hardware. [...] Another factor working in Apple's favor: Macs are vulnerable to few viruses and little spyware because both target mostly Windows-based users. Symantec, maker of Norton AntiVirus, says approximately 60,000 viruses aim at Windows-based PCs, but about 60 target Macs." Consumer Reports, arguably the most respected consumer ratings publication, recommends the new iMac G5 for "reliability and support." The Dec. issue also highlights Apple's iPod as one of the best holidy gift ideas.

But suit yourself....remain close minded and keep saying there is not enough software for Macs ....oh and FYI I am using a Bluetooth 3 button mini scroll-wheel mouse..no wires..3 buttons, scroll wheel..all work out of the box..OsX/Macs do not ship with a 2 button mouse (which, YES, is lame IMO) but the OS supports them with NO configuring the scroll wheel scrolls and the second button Ctrl clicks right off the bat...no arcane configuring

Hey while I have the mac users' attention, I need a weird favor to ask. Can one of you with a powerbook and/or ibook take off one of the keys and take a pretty close-up few of the underside of the key, and the mechanism on the keyboard itself? Thanks!
i have no clue how to. of course, mine is the coollllio fiberoptic keyboard so it might be stuck.

I remember when the big virus problem hit last year...

I was laughing away the whole time with my Apple.

There are fewer pop-ups, fewer viruses, and everything just works..

Only drawback, like I stated before, is the lack of fun software for it.

No, they still come off. I'm trying to see if the mechanism is the same as my dell's keyboard...if it is, guess who's buying a powerbook keyboard?

Looks like a few strong Macers have posted, I'm not going to waste my time cause they seem to already believe one thing, and one thing only...which is too bad. specialque, I'm sorry, some of what you've said is just wrong. This thread will probably go on for awhile, I'm just gonna quit right here. It's like arguing with a Bush supporter . Tunnel vision sux.

And let's drop the spyware crap, that is a user issue, not a problem caused by the computers design.

i'm not sure how entire keys come off, but the whole keyboard is on a plate. it was easier to take off an ibook keyboard since that is how you access the RAM and airport slots. but it was connected by some thin wide wiring.

A little off topic, but...

Has anyone networked a Windows laptop to a G4? Not that the models matter as much as Windows to Mac, but, I would like to do this if possible. PM me if you know how to.

Thanks!

Let's talk processors. RISC vs. CISC. The apple processor is faster. It requires less operations to do the same thing.
That's really a bad way of comparing RISC vs. CISC. I wouldn't really consider modern G5's strictly RISC anyway, the line is more blurred today than it was 10-15 years ago. Most Mac users would argue that their G3's were RISC and the PIIs at the time were CISC. Those people also didn't realise that the G3 has more instructions than the PII...go figure. Are you a salesman?

RISC processors are designed to reduce the number of cycles per instruction. That's different. But like I said, nothing is really RISC or CISC anymore, that's old school terminology

so far, i've only figured out how to access my PC from the mac, and not the other way around. but if i need files i can just drag and drop from the PC, or drag and drop into the PC from my computer.
