Default Preventing rips in soft top?

So I searched around and I couldn't find anything on it, but I know I've read about how most rips in the cloth tops happen where the cross bars are for the top and it rubs. Is there a secret to help prevent the rips from occurring? I was thinking about putting some sort of tap on the inside of the top but I didn't know if this would be a good idea or not. Maybe someone has a good link I should check out.

Thanks in advance!

I smoothed the bar out with some sand paper then stuck a piece of marine vinyl to the underside of the top where the bar would rub. No issues in the three plus years its been there.

I keep my top up when I park it in the garage, when I may not drive it for days. I try not to keep the top down for long periods of time.

The top is vinyl unless it's been replaced with a robbins cloth top at some point.

There was a very sharp weld fragment on the passanger side hinge pin on the convertable top frame on my car (above and behind the seat). I filed that down smooth. Reach around and feel behind all the hinge joints on the top frame and make sure you don't have any sharp areas.

Also, when lowering the top, be sure that the front/middle bar folds back. If it isn't doing it regularly, you can get stronger elastic straps through Modifry http://www.modifry.com/products/ctf/details.htm.

I even wrapped that part of the bar in electrical tape after I smoothed it out, just in case I missed any little burrs.
