Movin' on - bye bye S2k.
I am about to join the club of ex S2k owners as I have a BMW 3.0si Coupe on order that left the assembly line last Tuesday.
The S2k was a lot of fun and I find it difficult to describe just how much driving this car out on the track taught me. In the end, it was the mix of track/street that led to my decision to move to another vehicle. I didn't really feel safe out on the track with the OEM roll hoops and the roll bar I had installed made the car so stiff in the rear end that it was unpleasant to drive out on public roadways.
The extra stiffness was WONDERFUL
out on the track in terms of what it did for handling in the turns. I don't think any rear sway bar could even come close to how stiff this makes the rear end feel and the track days I did the last half of the season were a sheer delight.
On the other hand as an official "olde farte" that was just far too much for me as a daily driver car and I found myself longing for something more forgiving for public roadways. I did find it interesting to feel the original rear end compliance again this last week after we sawed out the bar and I reinstalled the OEM crossbar and OEM roll hoops/interior trim. While it is a really nice street machine without the roll bar, I wouldn't want to go out on a track without the extra protection. Thus, I am heading off for a slightly heavier car (3100lbs) with a hardtop and a little more oomph than the stock S2k.
Since I live in Washington where we have to pay sales tax on car purchases, it's almost a tossup over selling the car outright or trading it in. We only have to pay tax on the difference between the value of a trade in vs the selling price so I save almost $2000 in taxes with a trade in and that's not far off what I could do selling the car privately anyway. The auction folks who handle trade in stuff don't care about extras and add ons at all, so I have been returning the car to OEM condition to send it in as a bare bones vehicle.
Add on parts are now listed in the local FS sticky thread in the PDX forum.

Hi Alan,
The good news is that the community seems reasonably welcoming to us "former S2K owners". At least that's been my experience.
Keep us posted, and I assume that I'll be seeing you at PIR this season? Will you be teaching for the instructor's clinic (PCA/BMWACA) on 3/11?
