I agree with the idea of lower emissions, but not at any cost. Chretien wants to ram this through without having any idea HOW is it to be accomplished. "We'll work that out later" is his approach.

Speaking of remembering, does anybody remember the National Energy Program?

P.S. maybe we shouldn't discuss politics on a car enthusiast board and just agree to disagree.

yes politics and cars don't match

We don't need to ratify but can just put legislation in to reduce emmission on our own. Technology will overcome these problems for the industrialized countries but its those 3rd world countries who are developing that are the big offenders and they of course aren't the ones going to sign on.

So far it is a no win situation, might as well just enjoy our rides and be thankful our S is a ULEV car and we are doing are part

My 2 cents on Kyoto...

It has to be done gradually. Businesses need time to upgrade to newer equipment. This will also present itself with newer jobs. The whole world should be held by this accord because they will not only be disrupting mother nature but will also have the ability to undercut 'legit' operations because they never had to spend huge $ on clean up and new equipment. My brother-in-law has a large manufacturing shop here and I always here him complain about China and other third world companies who make it very difficult for Canada to compete.

Heh heh. The guy I pit crew for owns one of the few business that can look forward to doing far far far more business if Kyoto or something similar goes ahead... I've told him that if it gets ratified, I expect to be able to quit my job and go to work fulltime for him for six figures a year!!!

Firstly, the minister responsible for implementing Kyoto drives a Cadillac Escalade.

Secondly, Kyoto has limited impact if it is not ratified globally as BlackS2000 mentions. It just won't make sense otherwise.

If it's a case of Canada setting a world example, then it will definitely 'cost' us a lot to do so.

Third world or developing countries don't have time to worry abou the environment...they are too busy worring about making enough money to eat.

Unfortunately, worrying about the environment is a luxury that we are lucky to have.

I have heard that China, USA and others are not signing on. USA because Bush said no. China and others because it is too expensive for developing nations. So we are suckers if we lead by example. Just look at all of your household products. Almost everything is made in China. This will screw us more. Our impact on saving the world, a drop in the bucket.

How about saving mankind from AIDS. Africa 30 million HIV. Isn't that the population of Canada? It's going to spread through Europe, China and India in a big way. I think from that prospective, let's use the $ to save people from this plague first before it's too late.
