In my earlier years I crafted together many high quality, high output systems for under 1K that rivaled friends systems at $3-4K. Sometimes it worked out well buying friends' old amps, subs, and decks for a fraction of the price and just building new boxes and having what looked like a brand new setup.
I'll throw in my 2 cents since Chris mentioned my sound deadening project.
In my '04 S2000 I decided to try and eliminate or reduce the buzzy clutch sound that plagues the S2000, so I picked up some quiet car... it's a viscoelastic polymer that you can paint directly onto your car.
So I basically stripped the centre console, took out the seats, removed the plastic behind the seats, etc..
It made a huge difference in terms of the road noise and transmission noise coming up from between the seats. If I were more ambitious I probably would have applied that stuff to the doors as well.
Anyway, I had a decent stereo in my S2000 (can't remember exactly what components now as it's all long gone)... but even at speed it sounded clear, and I'm picky... my home theatre is around $6,000.
I even had to remove the sub for a trip out to the west coast in 2006 and even without the sub it sounded very good...
Total cost of my S2000 stereo was (maybe) $1500.... I did all of the install myself.
