No, not going to be any easier.

The wiring harness doesn't have the wiring for rear speakers. It has nothing to do with the HU. If the '00-01 HUs didn't have rear channels, you couldn't add the headrest speakers, and obviously this isn't the case. Remember, he isn't going to have a wiring harness adapter between the HU and the stock harness to splice into, as he's using the stock HU. Adding pins will be necessary, unless the previous owner did this (which I doubt).

Look at page 17:
http://www.handa-accessories.com/S20...2kheadrest.pdf

That's what he's going to have to do, whether it means going and getting that sub-harness connector from Honda and cutting into it, or going to an electrical supply store and getting pins with short wires.

Er, I appreciate all of the answers guys. Now I'm confused.

Agate, first you suggested that any year radio should work, now you're suggesting that I need to add pins or use a sub harness similiar to page 17 of that pdf.

So even though the rear speakers work now, is that because they're connected to the sony harness? Or is it possible they might be hooked up to the honda harness? Unfortunately, at the moment I don't have that goofy tool that sony decks need in order to remove it and see what's going on.

Sorry to get you all confused.

Yes, any year radio will work, it's the factory wiring harness that is the issue.

It's possible that the current speakers are going through the factory harness, in which case you won't have to do anything but plug in your new radio. If they're wired up using the Sony harness you'll need to add pins to the factory harness and connect the rear speakers to that. Unfortunately, you can't tell that until you pull your current HU out.

Just took my radio door off for the first time, and I should have known, but the sony was screwed in the same way the stock radio was so I didn't need any special tools to remove it.

It looks like the rear speakers are connected through the sony harness. It's just a huge mess, instead of using universal harnesses to connect everything they've got each wire from the sony harness capped or whatever to each wire of the honda harness.

I'm not very proficient with car electronics. All of this stuff is just giving me a headache.

they have rear pin out but you are having a harness without the wires/pins for it.

go to audio store and ask for a reverse harness/pig tail, it should be around 10 bucks.

just for your information, the civic uses the same harness(2000) with rear pins already built in, that might be your option too
