Default Amplifier location

I had just recently had a small JL audio sub/amp installed and the person who did it has the amp laying in where the jack and tools are... like right in the middle. When i got home I was messing around with it and the amp is HOT...I couldn't leave my hand there on it for more than 2 seconds. It doesn't seem like It should be that hot... Is this safe or no?

what amp are you running? class a/b or class d? what's the ohm rating? maybe consider upping the ohm's to run it cooler. do you have any sort of bass booster on? check your gain settings and maybe consider lowering them a bit as you could be pushing your amp too hard. just off the top of my head. may or may not be releveant.

Hi, i have seen one solution to the problem that i liked, the amp was put to left of the spear wheel. But i did not se how he solved it. This summer (2012) I found my solution to it. I am not shure of it will affect the amp (heat etc). I did not drill any holes. The amp is just small enough to fit. .The amp is part resting on the tank. so i have not connected it to the chassi in the back, just in front.

I used a bolt to hold the arm, a plastic plug to hold it steady (can se the support on the right side in the picture).

If this is a good solution or not I can not really say, but it has worked so fare

See my signature for an "amps on top of the fuel tank" solution. (Click the "ICE Pics here" link).

One amp in the spare tire and another one on the left side over the gas tank both press fit! Been fine for YEARS and lots of hard fast driving.

Agree, shouldn't be a problem. I had a Kenwood 200W amp jammed above the gas tank with the top surface pushed into the insulation under the rear tray and put 200k on it over 7 years with no trouble. Now, I'm not one to turn it up till my ears bleed but even in those cramped quarters the amp never got that hot.

Maybe the amp is under-sized for what you're dong with it? Or maybe the power wire is under-sized, which on some amps can cause it to draw more current as it tries to make up for the lower voltage.

That said, what exhaust do you have? Placement of the mufflers and how much heat they release on some non-stock systems can make the lower part of the trunk very hot, especially if the car idles for a long time (no air flow).
