Any truth to this?

Here's the way I look at it... If you were considering having 2 amps, just put the 4 channel in the other location you were planning to use besides the spare tire loc. I bet you won't notice the difference from having 2 amps as much as not having a spare when you need it...

ok mister orange county, what's the amp? what are you putting in?

some info would help us here.
Sorry for being vague. Here is what I have:

Pioneer DEH-P80MP deck
JBL GTO 75.4II amp
JBL Power P650C components

I'll be adding the steathbox after I've broken in all of the above.

I know some people here suggested listening to some local systems first, which I planned on doing... but I ended up getting the JBL stuff from my birthday, so then I just picked out a nice deck.

Anywho, that's what I'm working with.

only potential problem i see here is that the JL Stealthbox is generally wired for a 3 ohm load.

is the JBL amp stable at 2 ohms when mono?
a quick scan of the JBL manual says no. this amp is stable bridged only at 4 ohms.

so, you can't use this amp bridged mono to run the JL Stealthbox, UNLESS you have a 4 ohm total load in the stealthbox. most shops that sell the Stealth will swap out the JL 10W3v2.6 for a JL 10W3v2.2 and wire it up for a 4 ohm total load.

if you're good there, you're good to go. a 4 channel amp can very capably power a sub and 2 highs.

I saw this very thing while looking at the manual yesterday. I wasn't sure how serious they were about it not being able to handle 3 ohms bridged...

I guess this leaves me the option of either getting the SB and swapping the speakers (would most shops swap without charge?), or going with another custom box and maybe matching it with a JBL sub. The latter actually seems more likely now... it'd be nice to keep everything matched. Opinions here? Anyone point me in the direction of an empty box similar to the SB?

Sorry for all the questions people. I promise they'll slow after this stuff is all installed.

Those buttplugs are just trying to sell you another amp. In an s2000, you wont notice the benefits of a separate amp for each component, rather than one good amp for everything. You will be fine with one good amp.

you don't have to match everything. JL makes superior subs to JBL. phil points out that the JL 10W3v2.2 will work with your amp. so that's an option, they should let you swap out the speaker no problem.

or you can shop for a sub box. here's a for sale thread that might interest you. There are plenty of sub boxes that go up for sale in s2ki.

yeah, in most cases, there is no reason to match all your gear to the same namebrand. especially things like sub and amp. sometimes (like Alpine) you can match amps to HU and get some monitoring feedback at the headunit, but even that isn't completely necessary.

and most shops that i know or have heard of that sell the Stealthbox will readily and easily swap it for something that can be wired to 4 ohms for free.
just make sure it's established up front. heck, they can probably custom order it for you (since i doubt they stock the Stealth), and JL will do it before it ever ships. (i've heard of this being done as well.)

If you are still within the refund period on the amp, you may want to consider something that can handle a 2-ohm load...
