Default Any Way to Install a Transponder?

Hey all,

Just wondering if there is any transponder type device available to allow us to start the vehicle without the actual key in the ignition?

I was in a new Lexus today and the vehicle did not need a key to start, it simply utilized a remote with a transponder inside and when it is within range, you press the start button in the car and off you go.

Anybody familiar with this?

Doesn't it only work for cars with automatic transmission?

I don't know? I would imagine that if it is a factory option that they would only provide it on automatics for safety reasons. I guess that this is not something that somebody has done on their S. I would imagine that it would be very expensive.

No, it works for manual transmissions too. It has 3 neato features where an auto only has one:

1. Auto start car (if in neutral-same as an automatic)
2. Auto back-out of the garage (if in reverse)
3. Auto make-a-new-garage-door (if in 1st gear)

Yes, it could be done, but it would be pricy. You would need to change the entire ignition assembly to one of _____________(insert car name here that has keyless go), which would...a)not be cheap b)not be easy since the holes and panels wont line up.

However, if you have the money, and you have some fiberglass skills, easy as pie.

Thanks for the info bro. Not worth the time or money for me. Hopefully the next generation S2K's will offer this feature but I won't hold my breath on there even being a next gen S2K.

Just about every alarm manufacturer out there states that they are not recommended for manuals.

I really doubt OEMs will make them for manual transmissions, unless they come up with a way of "knowing" when the car is in neutral.

And speaking of that, I remember an article posted somewhere in this board where someone make a safety for auto-start with a magnet and a reed switch.
