Default Auto dim mirror

Has anyone tried to retrofit an auto dim rear view mirror? I find that with the top down the mirror catches reflections from street lights and makes rear vision less than adequate.

Seems like it would be an easy change. Where can you buy one of the auto mirrors?

Check the back small ads of popular car magazines. I've seen them. Pricey $200-300.

The newer maximas have auto dimmers, although, I have no idea how much they cost. I like the idea.

I installed one myself 7- 8 months ago. It works great - getting the original mirror button off was a minor problem. Heat gun then chisel and rubber mallet - popped off. The new mount they supplied is plastic and you get a bit of wobble when you hit bumps. Convenient to do this when you are doing hardtop because you have to remove the interior light and upper windshield trim and sun visors to thread the wiring. You have to also do this to put in the new strikers for the H/T. Pulling the sensor wire through the firewall / bulkhead is tough but I just used the same grommet as the main harness.

An autodimming mirror may be nice, but you really don't need one to solve your problem.

It sounds like you are using the dimming lever backwards. For day operation you should adjust the mirror with the small dimming lever pulled towards you. To dim the mirror at night, push the lever away from you angling the mirror downwards. The dimming function works with the reverse procedure, but then street lights will be reflected into your eyes. I just got an Auto Dimmer online and will hopefully recieve it in a day or two. The mirror is only an autodimmer no temp or compass for 99.00 shipped. Hopefully it is not a PITA. I did'nt care about the temp or compass since with the top down you know the temp and a compass is for people who care where they are going

I just got mine and installed it this evening and it works great. My only two complaints are the stability of the mount (causes slight shaking of mirror) and the difficulty in removing the button from the windshield.

It has great responsiveness to lights and looks good too...

I found this out a little too late. I was trying to get the mirror all the way seated and the button fell off. Off to the parts store to get some more epoxy stuff.

I did see that the mirror was not properly seated so when i do get it re-installed it should not shake

Had a glass place install it today and it works almost as good as OEM. It has a minute amount of shake over rough surfaces, but maybe only because I am looking at it closely.

I had the glass installer tell me that they could not install on top of the black peice on the window and that they could not remove it. Something about the heat caused from the reaction of the epoxy. I told him to go ahead and I'd be responsible for any damage. It worked fine in my case anyways.
