Best Radar Detector
You may want to define what best means for you.
Here's a post from last year that outlined what "best" meant for me and pics of my stealth install on the Escort SR7/ZR3 radar & laser diffuser combo. No tickets yet since I put it in. Wish I had done this before the ticket I got a few months after buying the car.

This has been a long discussion.....but I would like to drop a word if I may...
Ive had almost every brand, and model of detectors(older models)....Bel, Cobra, Uniden, K40(piece of sh!t) etc.....all these detectors were garbage paperweights except the V1 and the 8500. (Ive never used the 8500, but many respected members praise it)....
IMHO....assuming the V1 and the 8500 are AS good as one another, I would get the V1 simply for the arrows. It might seem like a gimmick, but knowing where the radar is coming from is VERY important. Ive had a cop follow me once on the freeway for close to 10 miles, with my V1 at full alert. Any other radar I would have taken it as a really bad false alarm.

it has a lcd screen that is not readable, even the led's are hard to see in the sun light. the s2k has alot of background noise, with the radio going i can not hear the thing. its construction is not that rugged.

I've got the 8500 X50 and have had it for about 8 months. Both the V1 an 8500 are the two best detectors you can buy, but the key is learning how to read them. You don't need arrows to tell you where the cop is. There are many situations that give distinct alerts. Normally, if a cop has his/her radar blazing away without using instant on and is coming at you, you're going to get a steadily increasing alert that will usually go full blast long before you even get close to the source. If the cop is coming up behind you, the rate of increase is obviously going to happen slower because the closure rate is less. Most of the time, you WILL know the difference between false alarms (automatic doors) and REAL police radar. An automatic door is just not strong enough to set the detector off past 2 or 3 bars unless you are right in front of it and then it is obvious what is setting it off. If you're speeding through the parking lot of a store, then you deserve a ticket.
"Instant-on" can be lethal if you're the only one on the road for miles. However, if a cop so much as turns his/her radar on for a few seconds to zap a car 1-1.5 miles ahead of you and the road is farely straight, you're going to pick it up. I've picked up a half dozen or so of these "weasels" using that tactic. I picked one up about 3 miles away one night in Oklahoma on a straight, flat road and was able to slow down minutes before I passed him. Sure enough, when I got about a 1/4 mile away, he zapped me with instant on, but I had already slowed down to the speed limit and laughed at him as I went by. I picked another one up on a curve like this also. The X50 works awesome.
I would say the worst combos would be coming up over a turning incline and getting hit with instant-on or getting hit with laser. You're pretty much screwed with both of them.

My V1 is indispensable. It does however never fail to alert me when an Inifiniti SUV is either behind me or in front of me.
I really wish they'd fix that false alarm for adaptive cruise control. Oh, and an IR remote control (like for a TV) will cause one to false too. I don't know the range on that one yet.

you can only get a V1 from the website...you cant get it anywhere else unless its used pretty much..
