Default Can you hook up an ipod directly to car speakers?

My friend has a GEM, it's like a street legal golf cart made by Chrysler and I was wondering in theres a way to hook an ipod directly to car speakers with no head unit? What would power the speakers?

THANKS!

Why would the cart have speakers and no head unit? Are you saying that you are thinking of adding just speakers? If so, no, the ipod will not drive speakers directly. You would need at the very least, a small power amp. With a power amp, the ipod itself could theoretically act as source and preamp since you have volume control and rudimentary tone controls. I run my self powered Bose speakers that way all the time. Those Bose are speakers with a built in power amp that run off 12VDC or 120VAC.

just get one of those ipod docking stations if you want to be as minimal as possible.

No, you cannot. Something has to power the speakers, and the IPOD doesnt have enough power to move them.

hes asking if you can power the speakers with just an I-POd, and the answer is NO. as you said in your own post, the set up you refer to as powered by an AMP, not the I-Pod.

No, you guys, Picturepro does understand. He is just elaborating on the no head unit concept. I've seen this done on boats too. Just an amp and speakers and a switch to turn on the amp. I've seen it done with a walkman, discman, and with an ipod.
