Default General question on speakers...

Hey guys...

I want to buy a sub.. probably a used one from Craigslist or something... but I'd hate to buy a speaker from a random person and come home to find out that its blown...

Is there a good way to test a woofer on the spot without having to set it up? AND... does will checking impedance indicate if its voice coil's (even for DVC's) are intact???

thanks in advance.

you can spot check the surround for tears, but they can be tough to spot (especially if it's a foam surround)

dropping it in a box is the only way I know of.

As Will said, you can inspect the surround for tears and wear. A VOM will verify if the voicecoils are blown or not. What you won't find out is if the woofer has been over driven and stressed or weakened the voicecoils which may cause premature failure.

There are soooo many discount audio websites that I would suggest buying new. You know what you're getting, impedence of the voicecoils, RMS power rating of the sub...etc.

You might even try a local shop that will support you. With the cost of shipping these days many local shops can be very competitive with the internet dealers and you're sure to get full manufacturers warranty on what you buy.
